SC High School Diploma Requirements:

The South Carolina State Department of Education requires a total of 24 units be earned to obtain the SC High School Diploma.  Credits required are as follows.

Students have a variety of courses to select from all subject areas including College Prep, Honors, Advanced Placement, Early College (Dual Credit) and International Baccalaureate.  Each level of course weighs differently in a students GPA.  The SC Uniformed Grading Scale can be found with the following link.  SC SDE 10 Point Grading Scale.

Many CATE courses are offered here at TRHS which can be used in lieu of the 1 Unit Foreign Language requirement.  CATE courses are also known as Career And Technology Education Courses.   All courses offered at TRHS High School specific to each subject matter can be reviewed with the following link.   Travelers Rest High School Course Catalog

Student Grade Level Promotion:

4 Year College or University Requirements:

Students seeking to apply to a 4 year college or university in their Freshman Year of College must have the following by the end of their Senior Year in addition to earning the 24 units required for the High School Diploma.  Note that a student planning to attend a 2 year college wishing to transfer to a 4 year college are not subject to this requirement.

Testing Information:

End of Course Exams (EOC's):  

The EOC counts 20 percent of the students' final grade. EOC's are mandated for the following courses.

PSAT:

The PSAT measures verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities enabling students to estimate future potential performance on the SAT.  The PSAT also provides entry into competition for important national scholarship and recognition programs.  

College bound sophomores and juniors should see their counsels in September to register for the test.  

ACT / SAT:

The ACT is an assessment test that measures a students skill in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science reasoning.  The SAT Reasoning Test assesses student reasoning based on knowledge and skills developed by the student in school course work.  The test is made up of separately timed  critical reasoning, mathematics and writing sections.  Preparation for the SAT should include practice through taking the PSAT and enrollment in rigorous, challenging high school courses.  

Beginning in 2018-2019 school year, all 3rd year students will be taking either the SAT or ACT, depending on their preference.  The test will be free of charge and administered at Travelers Rest High School.   In addition to this day for our 3rd year students, the ATC and SAT is offered several times during the year.  Students register online and may choose to take the test at any available location.  Information regarding the ACT and SAT including testing dates, location, preparation and registration can be found at www.act.org for the ACT and www.collegboard.org for the SAT.  

The ASVAB:

The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test designed to measure your abilities.  In consist of 10 short tests that can assess academic strengths.  The ASVAB is most commonly used to determine ones aptitude regarding the United States Armed Forces.  The State Department of Education encourages the use use of this test for career counseling.  Students should see their School Counselor about registration.  

Individual Graduation Planning (IGP):

Each student will be provided an IGP every year of high school.  This time is provided to speak with students assisting with academic, career and college planning.  Parents are welcome and are very much encouraged to attend.   Contact your School Counselor identified above in the section Stay In The Loop for more information.  Topics discussed but not limited to  in an IGP are as follows.
