About Mrs. Cannada

Hello,

I am a wife, mother, Mammy, and teacher. My husband is Brent Cannada. Brent and I have a son, Keith, and a daughter, Anna. Both of our children are married, so I have a wonderful son-in-law, Jay, and a beautiful daughter-in-law, Katie. My students will hear all about my grandsons, Griffin and Miller. I enjoy exploring South Carolina state parks, camping, walking my dog, Gracie, going canoeing, and reading outdoors. My passion is to bring my discoveries into the classroom in order to spark student learning.

I stayed at home with my children until Anna began first grade then I went to college to become a teacher. I began teaching in January 1998. I am in my 25th year of teaching. I have a BA+18 in Elementary Education with a Master's Degree in Reading and Literacy. In addition, I have the Master's+30. The +30 has focused on science and social studies and integrating the arts. I have traveled South Carolina looking for adventure and have some wonderful things to implement in the classroom.

I have attended the Peace Center's Summer Institute for Elementary Teachers. Also, I was honored to be the Peace Center Outreach  "2011-2012 Teacher of the YEAR". I am a graduate of teacher training in the Peace Center's Program (Intensive Development in Education through the Arts). I am mastering how to involve all of the students in our class in learning through the arts—music, drama, visual art, poetry and creative movement. In the classroom, students work hard to learn skills of concentration and cooperation, so we can work together to learn as a team. Many of the lessons involve movement and solving problems in groups. We spend time looking at different subjects through the arts, reflecting on experiences, and making personal connections to what we’re learning in school. Through the arts, we support the different ways that children learn and students are able to share what they know by creating something unique. I hope you’ll talk to your child about the different kinds of learning that takes place in our classroom.

I have served the South Carolina Aquarium as a staff member/volunteer for 20+ years. My title is an Education Leadership Partner (ELP). I have been given many opportunities to grow as a professional through my experiences with the SC Aquarium. Learning is something that I model and enjoy.

I could not do the things that I do without the support of my family, friends, colleagues, and parents. My family has learned to accept the strange items that I want to collect to share with students. Thank goodness!
