What is the Primary Years Program?

The IB Primary Years Program is a rigorous, inquiry based program for students in grade K4 through fifth grade. It is a place for learning-about ourselves and about the world around us. Our school offers a standards-based curriculum with an international perspective. We teach our students through guided inquiry using a framework designed by the International Baccalaureate Organizations Primary Years Programme (PYP).

As part of the PYP, students participate in six transdiciplinary themes:

  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize oursleves
  • Sharing the planet

What do we want students to learn?

The PYP has constructed a set of eight key concepts which answer the question: what do we want to the students to learn?

  • Form- What is it like?
  • Function: How does it work?
  • Causation: Why is it like it is?
  • Change: How is it changing?
  • Connection: How is it connected to other things?
  • Perspective: What are the points of view?
  • Responsibility: What is our responsibility?
  • Reflection: How do we know?

What do we want students to be able to do?

To help students construct meaning and understnadin, the IB works on students' acquiring and applying a range of skills including:

  • Social Skills
  • Thinking Skills
  • Research Skills
  • Communication Skills
