Level 1 - Newcomer Objectives


*Identify letters of the alphabet and alphabetical order

*Identify numbers from one to one hundred and ordinal numbers

*Practice using basic greetings and personal information such as age, birthday, phone number

*Identify colors and use colors to describe objects

*Identify basic classroom objects and places in the school

*Identify days of the week and months of the year

*Identify family members (dad, mom, brother, sister, grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousins)


*Identify and express basic needs (food, drink, and physical comfort)

*Give simple directions or commands

*Make introductions and respond appropriately

*Identify and discuss classes and subjects using days of the week and months of the year

*Use greetings in a variety of social situations


*Identify and tell time

*Compare the different writing systems and begin using capitalization and punctuation

*Use expressions of courtesy such as please, thank you and excuse me 

*Identify and talk about family


*Ask questions and use the words what, when, where, who, and why

Level 2 - Beginner Objective


*Express preferences: likes and dislikes

*Use vocabulary related to clothing, houses, places, and transportation

*Describe daily activities

*Find and give information

*Take information from signs, simple reading passages, newspapers, and other reference sources

*Continue previous objectives not mastered


*Identify and count coins

*Use US currency

*Talk about activities in the past and future


*Identify and practice using idioms

*Increase vocabulary and focus on words that are easily confused

Level 3 - Intermediate Objectives


Listening/Speaking:

*Communicate on a variety of topics in social settings

*Ask and answer questions

Reading

*Read and respond to a variety of fiction and non-fiction stories

*Identify the elements in short stories (characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution)

*Identify patterns in word structure

*Increase vocabulary and reading skills in the content areas

*Read a variety of printed material

Writing

*Write for different purposes using a variety of forms (poems, letters, essays)

*Use the writing process

*Arrange ideas in logical order

*Use pronouns, adjectives, prepositions and articles appropriately

*Use graphic organizers

*Use a variety of reference materials such as dictionaries


Level 4 - Advanced Objectives


Listening/Speaking:

*Initiate and sustain conversations on a variety of topics in different settings

*State and support a point of view on a classroom topic

*Monitor speech for accuracy and correct grammar

Reading:

*Use historical and cultural knowledge to identify themes in literature

*Use a variety of strategies to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words

*Use a variety of cues to determine the meaning from texts

*Use reading strategies before, during and after reading

Writing:

*Write effectively on a wide range of topics

*Write creatively in a variety of forms

*Use connecting words to relate ideas

*Proofread and publish written material

*Use spelling rules and patters to spell words correctly
