Dear Parent and Student:

WELCOME to my English Class.  I look forward to an exciting and rewarding time with you in class. I feel confident that we can learn a lot and have fun while we are learning. I am a firm believer in strong, positive character development. We must be prepared to work hard, stay focused, be considerate, and have an open mind. I am truly excited about our upcoming year together. As we both know, this year will be different for us all. I know that we will all come in with a positive outlook and work together as a team to rise to this new challenge of “educating while practicing safe and healthy behaviors”. Hillcrest High is very near and dear to my heart. I am a Hillcrest graduate, and my son is a 2016 Hillcrest graduate. I have lived in the Golden Strip area all of my life. Communication is very important to the success of your student. If you feel that your student needs extra help, please call me or send me an email.

Your student will receive a hard copy of the course syllabus and class expectations sheet in class this week. I will also place the same documents in our google classroom, and the documents are also included on my website. Please click this link to complete my parent contact google form here:  Parent contact and Permission form I will also send class emails, and I post announcements in our google classroom  frequently. If you submit your email address, I will send  an invite to join our google classroom. When you join our google classroom, you will see posted assignments, due dates, and your student's graded google assignment.

It is important that, in this class where we may be working on several things at once, everyone works with a sense of cooperation and respect for each other. I will not allow a disruptive student to take away from the learning environment of others in class or during an online google meet.

The Course Syllabus  and course standards are listed as a link on my web page, and both documents outline my plan for the year. I have structured it based on my belief that a firm foundation in the use of the English Language is very important for success in all other academic work. Said another way, without a powerful vocabulary and good writing skills, your success in school – and in life – will be limited.

Specifically to the student: To ensure that you have a successful year, it is very important that you attend class and online google meets regularly (if the class is meeting virtually), complete all assignments in class and during elearning on the days you are not in class, listen carefully in class and during google meets, watch assigned videos, participate in class discussions, and ask for help as soon as you think you need it. Assignments will be placed in google classroom for students who are absent from class on instruction days. I will not be a successful teacher until you are a successful student.

Specifically to the parent: If you have any concerns about your student’s performance while with me, please call and leave a message at 355-3536. You may also email me at sswalker@greenville.k12.sc.us .  My planning assignment is during 4th Block this year.  I will use my scheduled planning block to return calls or emails during the day.

All parents now have the ability to check their student’s grades on the parent portal. If you do not have access to your student’s backpack, please contact guidance. You will have the ability to check your student’s average, missed assignments, and test scores in the online grade book.

The next couple of weeks will be a period of transition for both the students and me. My main objective is to establish an atmosphere of stability, routine, and mutual respect. I am ready to share with your student the wonder of the English language, from the excitement it gives one when new ideas are discovered in literature, to its ability to inform and persuade others through an expanding vocabulary and firm grasp of the principles of grammar. Let’s all start our journey and reach for the stars! Congratulations on your new journey! Again, Welcome back class of 2026!
