Course Title: Physical Education I

Leisure Sports will follow this syllabus also. They will be excluded from FitnessGram and Sex Ed. Leisure Sports is an elective worth 1 unit.

Grading Plan: Student progress will be cumulatively assessed each nine weeks based on these methods of evaluation-

1st 9 Weeks

Dress out policy: Each student is required to purchase an Eastside Physical Education uniform. This

uniform must be worn daily to receive full course credit. Athletic shoes must be worn in

class with the uniform. Physical education uniforms are available from the PE teachers.

Each uniform will cost $20. If an extra short or shirt is needed, the cost will be $10

for each. Payments for PE uniforms are made through My School Bucks.


Journal/Portfolio: Each student will be required to keep a portfolio with all daily assignments and note sheets. This folder will be kept in the teacher’s office and returned as needed.


Grading Scale: A 100 – 90

B 89 – 80

C 79 – 70

D 69 – 60 (Partial GPR Point Credit)

F 59 or Below (No GPR Point Credit)


Homework:

· Students will be required to bring gym clothes daily.

· Each student is required to participate in activities outside of class for at least 3 days/week for a 6 week period (1st nine weeks and 4th nine weeks). Each student will be given a sheet each week that the parent/coach must sign confirming this participation. A cumulative grade will be assigned upon completion of this assignment.

· A personal fitness plan must be completed in written form.

· Each student is expected to study for tests when assigned.


Required Materials:

· An Eastside PE Uniform (available from instructor), socks

and tennis shoes daily

·pen or pencil(keep in locker)


Course Requirements:

Attendance: See student handbook pages 5 – 8. Parents and students are reminded that early

dismissals and/or late arrivals count against the absence total.


Tardies to school: Any student arriving after 8:45 without a doctor/court appearance note will

be assigned an unexcused tardy.

Tardies to class: Any student arriving in the locker rooms after the bell has sounded or to a

designated spot in the hallway or the gymnasium is considered tardy.


Make up Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to arrange to make up work within five days of an absence. Any work not made up will result in a zero. If a student is present on the day a test is announced and absent on the day of the test, he/she must take the test the day he/she returns.

Make up Assignments: If a student misses class they are responsible for making up the class or

classes they miss. These assignments can be found on my webpage. The options are the

following:


Written make-up – Research a fitness or sport based article related to the current unit

and write a brief summary about the article and reference the article.


Activity Make-Up – Incorporate a 30 – 45 minute exercise into your day. Log the

activity, time spent on the activity, sign the sheet, and turn it in as you would a regular

assignment.


Vacation Log - If you are going on vacation for an extended amount of time, you will

be responsible for a fitness/activity log while on vacation. This log will need to be

turned in upon your return to class.


Classroom Behavior Rules:

· Bring necessary materials with you daily.

· Follow directions, be prepared and pay attention. Failure to act accordingly may lead to detention. Detention is to be served the week it is assigned or ISS/OSS will be given.

· Get dressed quickly and report to your spot in the hallway for roll call.

Use the restroom before leaving locker room. We will not use restroom during class.

· Do not leave the gym without permission. If a student leaves the gym without permission, he or she will be assigned an after school detention.

· Respect school property. Keep all equipment, bleachers, gym, and locker rooms in good condition.

· Keep off of the bleachers. This includes small set beside storage room.

· No food, drink, or gum in the gym at any time.

· No grabbing onto the basketball goals.

· No horseplay in the locker rooms or gym.

· No one will be allowed to use cell phones or any other electronic device.

· Make-up work is your responsibility.

Classroom Procedures and Expectations:

· Students are to be in the locker rooms by the final note of the bell.

· The attendance and tardy policies have been listed in the school handbook.

· You are allowed a maximum of 5 absences before credit is denied.

· More than five minutes late to class is considered a cut. If you miss half of the class period it will be counted as an absence.

· After an absence you must report to the attendance office to get an admittance slip.

· Each student is expected to dress out and participate every day. Shoes other than athletic shoes will not be allowed on the gym floor. If a student does not have proper shoes, they will not be considered as dressed for that day.

· Valuables are not to be brought to the gym. Students are asked not to bring large sums of money to school. Lockers are not designed for valuable items. Lockers should be used only for clothes storage during class time. Wallets, purses jewelry, etc should be turned in to the teacher at the beginning of the period. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up all personal items before leaving. If items are stolen, Eastside High School cannot be responsible.

Students are responsible for their assigned locks. Lost or damaged locks will be paid for by the student.


Cell Phone Policy: “During class no student may have turned on, or use a cell phone, MP3 player, or any other electronic paging device unless directed by a teacher for classroom use. Class disruptions due to electronic devices will result in disciplinary action. Students may not leave class, at any time, for any reason, to use an electronic device.

Neither the school nor the district will be responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged electronic device or cell phone brought onto school property.”

Discipline: Refusal to Obey or Classroom Disruption.
