Parent Resources

Here you will find multiple resources to help your child succeed in second grade! I will post links to websites that you can use at home as well as different math and reading strategies we are using in the classroom.

Parent Friendly SC State Standards

Here is a link to parent friendly SC state standards that explains everything we will be learning in second grade. It breaks down each unit and describes what students will be expected to know. You can also find standards for grades K-12!

Math

Prodigy Math

https://play.prodigygame.com/

Students can log on to Prodigy Math and play games! This adventure game requires students to use their math skills to defeat enemies and reach new levels! Students know their login information by heart and should be able to independently log onto Prodigy Math. We use it daily in class.

Money

In second grade students are expected to be able to recognize types of coins and their values. They also need to know how to count money.

Here's a helpful song reminding students how to count money!

Adding and Subtracting Using Base 10 Blocks

Here is a video explaining how we add and subtract using Base 10 Blocks. Students learn how to add and subtract with and without regrouping using numbers from 0-999.

Reading

EPIC! Books for Kids

https://www.getepic.com/app/

EPIC is a great resource for reading online! It is an online library with lots of books for kids to read. My class code is aev-2518. Students know how to log on to the website! We are already using it in class every day!

We use the 5 finger rule to help us find "just right" books. We put a finger up for every word we don't know on one page. We want to have only 1 or 2 fingers up! That way we know that the book is just right for us and we can understand what we are reading!

Ask your child questions after they read to see if they understand the story. These Depth of Knowledge (DOK) questions are great for checking your child's reading comprehension! The higher the DOK level the more difficult the questions! The goal is for your child to be comfortable answering DOK 2 and DOK 3 level questions.
