COURSE DESCRIPTION : The JROTC Program is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment while instilling in them self esteem, teamwork and self discipline. The mission statement is “To motivate young people to better citizens”. They will be involved on “Cadet Challenge” where the will try to achieve above the 50% success rate.

PROGRAM OF INSTRUCTIONS : JROTC Courses include (but are not limited to) the following topics of training: Leadership Theory and Application, Character Development, Study Skills, Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution, Service learning , Career planning, Health and Wellness, First Aid, Geography, American History, and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATION : WHS cadets will follow the policies and set the example that all members of the student body are to follow. Appearance of the student regarding clothing and or physical appearance can also be considered inappropriate for a productive learning environment on JROTC; therefore all cadets must adhere to high standards of the corps of cadets in all school related activities. The conduct of a cadet is non-destructive and participative.

MATERIAL/UNIFORM : Issued Property is signed for an individual hand receipt and parent must sign a Parental release and Health Statement. Uniform is issued clean and serviceable. It must be returned in a serviceable manner for reissue to another cadet. Upon uniform turn in at the end of the semester, dry cleaning is not required. Missing items must be paid for before the cadet will be cleared by Woodmont High School for transfer or graduation.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES : We anticipate having 3 extracurricular activities offered this school year.

1. Color Guard : The Color Guard Teams are responsible for presenting/posting the National Colors at various school and community events throughout the entire school year. The Color Guard teams will also compete in Drills Meets during the 1st semester. Occasionally cadets will be called upon to provide instruction of proper flag etiquette to outside organizations.

2. Drill Team : The Drill Team will Trai n for and compete in meets during the 1st semester . Training begins in the fall and continues through 1st Semester until the end of the competition season. The cadets must be proficient in both armed and unarmed drill movements. To compete, as with other school competitive teams, fundraising will be an Integral part of the success to offset various expenses related to the competitions.

3. Honor Guard : The Honor Guard Team will be proficient and perform in various activities and duties with the school and among the community. This requires proficiency with movement of both rifles and sabers.

ACTIVITIES : JROTC activities will be wide raining. JROTC will march in 2 parades this year. The cadet will go on 1 or 2 field trips this year. Cadet will participate in a service Learning Project this year. The JROTC Drill Team will travel throughout South Carolina to eventually compete in the State Championship. We strive to be very visible in the community during various events. To participate in JROTC extracurricular activities and various events, Cadet must maintain high standards for their appearance, perform, and conduct.

DRILL ACTIVITIES: 30%

UNIFORM INSPECTION: 30%

QUIZ: 20%

PHYSICAL TRAINING: 20%

FINAL EXAM: 20%

NOTE: IT IS MANDATORY TO WEAR THE UNIFORM ON UNIFORM DAY. THE PRESCRIBED DAY IS WEDNESDAY OF EACH WEEK. WITHOUT ADEQUATE MAKE-UP, THE RESULT WILL BE A COURSE FAILURE.

DAILY MATERIALS: Cadets are required to bring a notebook, JROTC Cadet Reference Guide, pencil, pen, paper, and a positive attitude with them to class daily.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE: Monday will generally be drill day. Tuesday and Thursday will generally be academic days that may also involve drill. Wednesday will generally be uniform day. Friday will generally be a physical training (PT) day. All cadets must come prepared for training on those days. “Prepared” consists of APPROPRIATE clothing used for a physical education class. EXAMPLE: Running Shoes, Shorts, Sweat Pants, T-Shirt/Sweat Shirt, and if preferred ACCEPTABLE knit cap for winter months. Gloves are not permitted for PT.
