BRYSON MIDDLE SCHOOL- SYLLABUS FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION

INSTRUCTORS: Matthew Riddle, Logan Samples & Garrett Holmes

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: The middle school physical education program is designed as a prerequisite for the high school’s program. Students will be in this course for one semester during the school year. There will be a heavy emphasis on physical fitness and an informed, healthy lifestyle. The students will participate in the national "Fitness Gram" test as required by the State Department of Education. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities and will be expected to become age-level proficient in at least two of the activities. Additionally, Health Education at Bryson Middle School is integrated within the semester. The course will focus on life skills and activities to enhance the students’ ability to make healthy choices throughout life. Aside from a general health education, all boys and girls enrolled in Physical Education are instructed separately for the Sexuality Education portion of the curriculum requirements.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: PE appropriate clothes/shoes, Google Chromebook, personal water bottle

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENTS: Physical education/Health  instructors will teach and equal portion of the students in the school with their ages ranging from ten to fifteen, all grades inclusive. Our student body is made up of the full socio-economic spectrum with the majority coming from rural, middle class working families.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE STANDARDS

Standard 1 The student will demonstrate competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2 The student will demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performing of physical activities.

Standard 3 The student will participate regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4 The student will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5 The student will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical-activity settings.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE HEALTH EDUCATION COURSE STANDARDS

Standard 1: The student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion to enhance health.

Standard 2: The student will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

Standard 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

Standard 4: The student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 5: The student will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Standard 6: The student will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Standard 7: The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and to avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 8: The student will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and consumer health.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND RESOURCES:

Rubicon Atlas- GCS Physical Education and Health curriculum, GCS Sexual Education curriculum, Text: Holt, Rhinehart, Winston. Decisions for Health, 2004., Botvin LifeSkills Training

The text will be used only in class. Hand-outs and other supplemental materials will be distributed to the students as needed.

MAJOR ASSESSMENTS PER SEMESTER MAY INCLUDE:

Sports/Fitness assessments, written assessments on sports knowledge and health education instruction.

GRADING SCALE:

Students in Physical Education/Life Fitness will be graded on the numeric scale below:

PE/Health scale:

Major-50 % (Tests, Projects)

Minor-50% Effort  (Dressing out, Participation), Classwork, Skills

Failure to participate in class- 5 point deduction each day

Failure to turn in written assessment  is a 10 point deduction each day it is not turned in.

Failure to wear appropriate foot attire in class - 5 point deduction each day.

HOMEWORK:

Occasionally, students will be given homework that will correspond with subjects we will cover in class. Please make sure that all major assignments (i.e. Sex Education packet) are turned in completed and on time.

MAKE-UP WORK:

Ample time will be allowed for students to make-up work that was missed while they were absent.

RULES FOR BEHAVIOR:

1. Students should come to class on time.

2. Students should bring necessary materials to class.  Students will be expected to participate in class everyday.

3. Students should keep their hands, feet, and all other objects to themselves.

4. Students should respect themselves, others, and equipment.

5. Students should follow all school rules.

CONSEQUENCES:

1st step: a warning is given

2nd step: notification of the parent/guardian of the child breaking a rule

3rd step:  Referral - Disruptive behavior will result in immediate referral or administrative intervention.

CLASS PROCEDURES: Students will be expected to arrive to class by the time the tardy bell rings.  Students will be allowed to take water/restroom breaks during the first few minutes of class and warm-up activities only. Once students have reported for the start of class, special permission will be granted on an “as-needed” basis.

GYM UNIFORM ATTIRE: Proper  athletic attire & athletic shoes. (*There will be no dressing out until further notice)

Not allowed: shirts and bottoms with inappropriate words/images, leggings, jeggings, shorts above mid-thigh, non-athletic shoes (heels, sandals, Sperry’s or any type of boat shoe, boots.)

COMMUNICATION: Parental communication will be done in a variety of ways. Phone calls, emails, GoogleMeet, & Google Classroom. In-Person meetings may be scheduled by calling the front office.

Fitnessgram, Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Health, Sexual Education, , Fitness, Handball, Basketball,  Racquet Sports, Kickball, Soccer, volleyball, etc.
