About Me
Greetings! My name is Sara Mendez. I go by Mrs. Mendez, Mrs. M, or Mrs. M&M. I am grateful to be serving as the mental health therapist at both Reedy Laurel and Sara Collins Elementary Schools! I have been helping children and families for 9 years. I am passionate about supporting students in feeling safe, confident, and successful at school, home, and in the community. I enjoy creating a warm, welcoming, and safe space where every person knows they are valued.
I received my Bachelors degree in Psychology from Purdue University and Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling with an additional Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Rehabilitation from The University of South Carolina's School of Medicine.
I have specialized training in evidence-based Level Four Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT).
I help students and families with:
Learning and managing big feelings.
Building positive interpersonal relationship interactions.
Solving conflict.
Developing coping skills.
Adjusting to changes.
Processing trauma narratives.
Improving communication skills.
Building self-esteem.
Positive parenting strategies to assist with at-home behavioral issues (ages 0-12 yrs old).

My Approach
I believe children and families learn and grow best in environments where they feel understood and supported. My clinical practice includes multiple therapy modalities, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Group Therapy, Family Therapy, Holistic Perspective, Goal Oriented, Family Dynamics, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and TFCBT. Additionally, I use play-based therapy, talk therapy, psychoeducation, strengths-based approach, and trauma-informed practices to help students build emotional skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
Why I Love Working With Elementary Students
I enjoy working with children because this is an important stage of emotional and social development. Children are learning who they are, how to express their feelings, and how to connect with others. Being part of that journey is an honor. I also value the strong relationships that form when working with families—together, we create a nurturing foundation that helps each child thrive to their potential.
Outside of School
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. We love to travel, dance, listen to music, cook, and finding any good reason to celebrate! I am a huge enthusiast for music, roller coasters, museums, true crime shows, and FOOD!!!! These activities help me recharge so I can serve others best.
