Welcome to Ms. Doughty's Kindergarten Class

Welcome to Kindergarten! We are glad you stopped by to take a look at our website! It will be here to provide contact information, class information, newsletters, homework, information about upcoming classroom or school events, and what we are learning in the classroom.

Our phonics, reading, and writing curriculum will be taught using myView by SAVVAS. This curriculum will include interactive pieces for students during lessons in the classroom as well as take home pieces that you will be able to read with your child or have your child read to you. High frequency words for the week will be sent home in the weekly newsletter so that you may refer to and reference these words at home while they are also being used in the classroom.

The Social Studies standards will teach students about rules, how people can change over time, identify needs and wants, jobs and why they are important, and identify different parts of a map and use maps to begin to locate places. There will be different times during the year where at home projects will be created to be brought in and shared or we will ask for different items to be sent in to support our learning.

In Science, we will discuss the weather, the seasons, properties of objects and materials, and an introduction to living and non-living things. We may ask for certain items to be brought in for a sharing and comparing time as we discuss different topics in science. We will also ask at different times for projects to be completed at home in relation to our science topics in order to increase our discovery.

Math will be filled with numbers, counting, adding and subtracting, patterns, and shapes. Students will identify numbers to 20 by counting, by identifying the number in a group, and identify the numeral itself. Students should also be able to count to 100 by 1s and by 10s. Students will add and subtract within 10 using counters, as well as identify and write equations (number sentences). Students will learn to identify, create, and extend patterns of different types. The patterns students must learn are AB, ABC, ABB, and AAB. Students will learn that shapes are two dimensional and flat or three dimensional and solid. Students should be able to identify the shape name, describe attributes of the shape, and draw or create a model of the shape.

We look forward to learning and growing more as we are introduced to new topics or familiar topics in a new way.

Please encourage us on our learning journey so that we will strive to be successful even when we may not want to learn or do our homework.

Sincerely,

Ms. Doughty
