Instructional Materials and Resources:

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys reading series is used in our kindergarten classrooms.  This is a comprehensive language and literacy series.  We use this in addition to the Fountas and Pinnell literacy kits which include interactive read alouds, shared reading and word work. In addition, kindergarten follows Lucy Calkin’s Writing Workshop mini lessons and writing time.

Kindergarten teachers integrate materials and methods from  our mathematics curriculum, Big Ideas. It includes many hands-on and exploratory experiences for our students.

Social studies and science are integrated into each unit of study.

Assessments Used in Kindergarten:

Students in K5 will receive quarterly report cards.  This standards based report card is designed to inform parents about each child’s progress and mastering South Carolina Academic Standards.  These standards establish high and challenging expectations for all students in preparing them to be college and career ready.

In addition, all kindergarten students in South Carolina are required to be assessed through the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA), as well as district reading, writing, and math benchmarks which are scheduled throughout the year.

Our students are also informally assessed daily.

Homework:

Homework is given on an "as needed" basis. However, we expect you to read with and to your child every night.

If your child is out for an extended period of time where he or she may miss a significant amount of instruction and assignments, the teacher will be in contact with parents to schedule make up assignments.
