Karen Haltiwanger

Literacy Specialist

Karen Haltiwanger is about to begin her third year as the literacy specialist at Mitchell Road Elementary. Before that she taught both kindergarten and second grade at Mitchell Road where she has worked for 20 years! She has also worked as a resource teacher at Beck Academy and Hillcrest High School.

From Mrs. H~ My husband and I are about to be empty nesters as our youngest daughter is heading off to college in the fall. We also have two other daughters who are both married! When I am not spending time with my family, my favorite thing to do is read! I LOVE sharing my passion for reading with students. In addition to reading, I love walking on the beach and traveling.

Chappell Hughes

Instructional Coach

Chappell has been an educator in South Carolina for 22 years.  This is her 19th year at Mitchell Road and her 10th year as Instructional Coach at MRES.  She taught first and second grades in Richland District Two and Greenville County and she believes that if a child learns that he is loved, he will love to learn.

From Mrs. Hughes~ My husband and I have two children.  As a family we love just being outside-- hiking, riding bikes, and taking walks downtown or at Furman.  Coaching is a passion of mine because I love learning beside others!

"The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”
