Dr. Ravan's Physical Education Class
Welcome to Physical Education class. This is my 18th year of teaching. I received my BS degree from Lander University in 2004, my Masters from Clemson in 2005, and my doctorate from Converse in 2021. I am married and have a son and a daughter. I am looking forward to a great school year. Go Mustangs!

Course Description: This course helps students to develop the attitudes and skills used to achieve a personal level of fitness. This course will help students satisfy the requirements for Performance Indicators 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the South Carolina Physical Education curriculum requirements. Mastery of information will provide students with the concepts needed to maintain a desired state of fitness throughout their lifetime.
A physically educated person:
1. Demonstrates competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performing of physical activities.
3. Participates regularly in physical activity.
4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical-activity settings.
6. Demonstrates awareness that physical activity provides the opportunity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.
Course Objectives: The course standards are outlined by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education found in the South Carolina Curriculum Guide.
1. Demonstrates competency in modified version of activities in three movement forms.
2. Participates regularly in health enhancing physical activity outside the physical education class.
3. Meets the standard for health related physical fitness for his/her age group, and gender published by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
4. Demonstrates knowledge of the five components of fitness and the F. I. T. principles on a written test.
Course Outline: This course outline is a guide in assisting the teacher in planning units of instruction. When necessary, adjustments to the material covered will be made.

Evaluation Criteria: Student progress is cumulatively assessed throughout the semester in the following areas:
Sport Rotations Minor 25%
Health Minor 25%
Fitness Activities/Tests Major 50%
Grading Scale:
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=61-69 F= below 60
Grading Policy:
Minor Grades (8 total each nine weeks, 16 total each semester)
25 points/day for Participating in Sport Rotations (actively participating and have the correct shoes)
Health lessons will take place one day per week and a grade will be given each week (minor grade)
Major Grades (3 each nine weeks, 6 total each semester)
Class Procedures and Rules:
Gym and Locker Room Guidelines
1. Respect others and equipment.
2. Come prepared to class.
3. No food or drink in the gym or locker room.
4. Be on time to class and exercise spots.
5. Observe all Mauldin Middle School Rules.
Dressing out Policy: Dressing out will be optional. Proper athletic shoes are required each day. Locks and lockers will be issued for those who wish to use them.
25 points will be collected each day for a total of 100 points (minor grade) each week for Sport rotations
100 points will be collected (not every week) for the health lessons.
Every Friday will be "Fit Friday". The mile run will be ran each week (unless inclement weather). Points are collected each week up 100 pts.
Attendance/Tardy Policy: Students are expected to be in class on time and with proper athletic shoes.

Parent Communication: Parent/Guardian communication will be established through phone calls, letters home, e-mail, progress reports, fitness achievement reports, and conferences.
