What is an Instructional Coach?

  • I have the best job in the world! I get to work with 776 students every day and with about 75 fabulous staff members. My job responsibilities are varied, but ultimately, everything hinges on student success. Here is a quick summary of the major responsibilities:

Data Analysis - I look at data to determine strengths and weaknesses in our program. I look for patterns over time so I can find supplemental resources for teachers or so that we can adjust instructional planning to meet the needs of the students.

Technology - I look for new trends in instructional technology to enhance student learning or to make teachers' jobs more effective. I help to arrange professional development in this area as the need arises.

Mentoring New Staff - I head up our school's mentoring program. This means that I work with brand new teachers in their first job in education, but I also work with teachers who have years of experience but are new to Greenville County Schools.

Instructional "Best Practices" - The school district remains cutting edge in instructional practices. They make a considerable effort to train ICs who then, in turn, share the knowledge with teachers in their own buildings. I could be sharing these instructional strategies by modelling them in one classroom, or in grade level common planning meetings, or even in full faculty professional development sessions.
