Course Description: The Cosmetology program is designed to prepare the students to qualify for the South Carolina State licensing examination. The student receives training in the arts and science of the care and beautification of the hair, skin, and nails. The course of study includes scalp treatments, hair shaping, hair styling, setting, waving, hair coloring, and shampoos and rinses. Care of skin and nails includes manicuring and pedicures, massage, facials, make-up application and hair removal. Instruction in chemistry, bacteriology, anatomy, physiology of the face, head, arms and hands is incorporated by means of theory and of practical application on both mannequins and live models. Also included in the course of study is salon planning and management.

The Cosmetology Program at Bonds Career Center is a two-year licensure course, taught consecutively in four semesters the 11th and 12th grade years. Per the SCLLR (South Carolina Labor Licensing Regulation) and SCDOE (South Carolina Department of Education), 1540 hours are required to be eligible for licensure in South Carolina. 1000 of those hours must be obtained by direct, face to face instruction with your licensed Bonds Cosmetology Instructor. The other 540 hours are obtained through passing the following at your home high school; English courses, Math courses, Science, and a technology course. You must complete all 1000 hours at Bonds to be eligible to receive the 540 academic hours. In addition to the 1540 hours you must pass the State Board Exam, to be eligible for your Affidavit of Completion to receive your license.

In addition to the required hours, the SCDOE requires a minimum grade average of 75 to move on to the next level of Cosmetology.

We trust that you will ensure that you are at school every day unless extreme circumstances arise. Our hours consist of contact teaching and lab hours, as virtual instruction is not an option for this program. We will have occasional after school time and Saturday sessions offered to provide students opportunities to make up missed hours and to acquire the necessary hours for program completion. We recommend each student attend all of the provided sessions to prevent you from lacking hours upon graduation. If you do not have 1000 Cosmetology hours and 540 academic hours at the conclusion of the program, an Affidavit of Completion will not be signed by the Cosmetology Instructor, even with passing State Board Exam scores. This will result in your cosmetology license not being issued by SC State Board of Cosmetology.

 Early Finishers

Cosmetology is a great career field and there are many things that Cosmetologists can do to improve on and stay up to date with industry standards. We complete a lot of practical & theory work at our own pace, however you are expected to use your time effectively and wisely. In the salon, you will be expected to complete daily tasks and be productive during slow times. The same will be expected at Bonds. Socializing or lounging is considered insubordination and will result in a loss of hours. The following list should assist you in filling all of your “down time”.

The more effectively you use your time, the more productive you will feel. Consider PRODUCTIVITY your next step to success.
