Directions:

Instead of writing a typical research paper, we are going to be creating a Bloom's Ball with our research. We are each going to be researching a country from which immigrants have come to the US. Please pick a country that has meaning to you. Countries in Europe are going to be easier to research because there is more information.

Scroll down to view the rubric for how I will be grading you.

This is going to be so much fun! You got this.

Email Miss Estelle if you have any questions.

Step 1 - Research

Your goal is to create a Bloom's Ball containing facts and information about a country whose people choose to immigrate to the United States. First, you will need to gather some research by answering the questions for each of your pages.

You may use your textbook, the internet, or any other sources. You may use websites that end in .edu, .org, or .gov.

Remember, you are looking for websites with C.A.R.S (credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, and support).

You MAY NOT use Wikipedia for your research. It is unreliable because it can be edited, by kids like Bryce.

Tips on Note-Taking when Finding Research Online:

  1. Read a section of text, pause to think about what is important, and then write your notes.

  2. Consider the main ideas and supporting details as you read.

  3. A structure like boxes and bullets can help you organize your notes.

  4. Instead of copying from the text, put the information IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

  5. Keep track of or bookmark your source so you can return later to confirm or get more information.

Step 2 - Plan

Circle 1: Title - Write the name of the country you are researching. Plan your lettering to be attractive. Include your name on the bottom left.

Circle 2: List 4-5 facts about the country - Using bullets, list 4 or 5 interesting facts about your country. (Examples: What type of government, population today, languages spoken, religion?)

Circle 3: Emigrant/Immigrant - In one paragraph (5-7) sentences, explain how people in your country would move to the United States today. Boat? Plane? Train? Also, give some reasons why people would leave this country for the United States. Be sure to indent your paragraph.

Circle 4: Text Feature - Draw a simple map of your country and label the capital city on the map.

Circle 5: Text Feature - Draw a picture of the national flag of your country. Be sure to put your country’s name above the flag.

Circle 6: Poem - Write a poem about this country. Any style poem will work. Make it creative, maybe a shape poem or free verse!

Circle 7: Illustration - List and draw 3 common foods that are eaten in your country.

Circle 8: Text Feature - Create one of the following text features about your country (Chart, graph, Picture and Caption, Diagram). YOU MAY NOT DRAW A MAP.

Circle 9: Compare/Contrast Text Structure - In at least 5 – 7 complete sentences, compare this country to the United States. (Examples: Is the weather the same? Is the language spoken the same? What kind of government? What age do children go to school? How do people dress? This should be written using the text structure of compare and contrast.)

Circle 10: Interesting words/Glossary - In bullet form, list 4-5 new words that you learned about this country and give their meanings.

Circle 11: Student Choice - On this circle, you will decide what to include about your country. These can be in paragraph form, bullets, poems, a DIFFERENT text feature, etc. Try to add something very unique about your country.

Circle 12: Opinion - In at least a 5 sentence paragraph, write about whether you would like to travel to this country or not and why. Be sure to indent your paragraph.

Step 3 - Write

You will write out each of your circles according to the directions. You should use the research you collected to guide your writing. Obviously, complete sentences, correct grammar, and correct punctuation are expected.

Step 4 - Publish

We will be editing and proofreading each of your circles to make sure you are ready to publish. I will grade your published work before we create the Bloom's Ball.

Step 5 - Create the Bloom's Ball

We will work step by step to put your circles together and create your Bloom's Ball!
