The preschool literary curriculum that will be introduced to students is a unique style of teaching material that reinforces rhyme, rhythm and repetition, and is a powerful tool for creating a language rich environment in the classroom. Goals and objectives as well as activities have been written to include the five domains of learning, which are; communication, academic readiness, fine and gross motor, daily living and socialization skills. The teacher will modify and teach what is appropriate for the students in the classroom.
Each unit has key vocabulary words and phrases that are taught throughout the month. There are verbs, action words and words that can be used for object identification. Each unit states the teachable concepts and the items that can be identified in the teaching unit. Each domain taught has goals and objectives that are presented for the month. They include the following:
Communication skills:
1. Increase the number of spoken or signed words
2. Repeat familiar 2, 3, 4 word phrases
3. Point to or name objects as pictured in the story
4. Point to or name objects described by their use
5. Use/Demonstrate the meaning of classification names, like toys or animals
6. Use past tense of common verbs
7. Relate experiences with some understanding of sequence, beginning and closure
8. Use pronouns from the stories (I, he, him, she, they, his, my, and me)
9. Identify body parts.
10. Practice use of prepositions and articles of speech
11. Answer “who, what, when” questions
12. Answer “why” question
13. Use plurals of common words adding “s”
14. Tell a familiar story using picture cues
15. Distinguish between loud and soft voice inflection showing the ability to whisper
16. Respond appropriately to questions that pertain to the story
17. Sing familiar songs, and repeat rhymes, finger plays and poems associated with the story
18. And any other objectives that pertain to a particular unit
Academic Readiness Skills:
1. Follow along in a book as it is being read
2. Increase attention span to remain focused on the story
3. Take part in reading by “filling in” repetitive rhyming words or familiar words or phrases (Each unit will have their own set of words.)
4. Count animals or objects up to ten
5. Count objects with one to one correspondence up to ten
6. Match pairs
7. Use visual discrimination to do matching activities.
8. Know use of objects and answer questions about them after being exposed to these objects during the month of study
9. Demonstrate knowledge of abstract concepts that are presented in the units
10. Match, sort, point to, or name colors that are presented
11. Identify the following shapes: circle, square, triangle, star, heart, rectangle, and diamond
12. Use visual discrimination to match big and little objects
13. Use visual discrimination to match big, bigger, and biggest
14. Improve memory skills and the ability to predict what will happen next
15. Identify the concept “round” or circle in a variety of objects
16. Use visual discrimination to match, small, medium, and large objects
17. And any other objectives that pertain to a particular unit.
Gross and Fine Motor Skills:
1. Demonstrate both gross and fine motor coordination when using a primary paintbrush to apply paint to a large pre-drawn objects on an ease
2. Reinforce balance and coordination by following a path using gross motor skills in movements like, walking, walking on tiptoes, hopping, and crawling
3. March or dance to music related to the story
4. Practice walking upstairs alternating feet
5. Practice walking downstairs alternating feet
6. Practice jumping skills
7. Toss or throwing a ball or object into a container or to another student
8. Complete pasting activities that focus on fine motor stills necessary to appropriately complete a given project
9. Use appropriate pencil grip when using a wide marker or crayons to complete art or academic activities
10. Demonstrate appropriate scissor skills by completing projects that require: holding scissors correctly, holding the paper in preparation for cutting, snipping, cutting a five inch straight line, cutting a curved line, and cutting a closed shape
