Countdown to Middle School: Important Dates Below


August 2023

August 8th   First Day of School

Tips:

Make every day count.  Make sure your child is attending school.  Encourage your child to write down homework assignments in his/her notebook.  Have a quiet place and a set time for homework.  Tell your child he/she is “special” every day.  Provide necessary supplies.  Remember to join the PTA


September 2023

September 4th - Student Holiday

Tips:

Remember to review your child’s homework.  Schedule conferences as needed  with your child's teachers.  Make sure your child has a designated place to study and  do their work.   Begin preparing for middle school.  Some of the charter middle schools begin taking applications this month. 


October 2023- National Middle School Month 

October 1st-November 1st at 5pm: Langston Lottery Application Open

October 5th and 7th- Langston Open House 6:30pm

October 10th- Hughes Academy Open House 5:30pm-7pm

October 11th - End of 1st Grading Period

October 12th & 13th- No School For Students

October 19th- Beck Academy Open House 5:30pm

October 19th- League Academy Open House 5:30pm

October 21st- Langston Open House at 10am 

October 19th - Report Cards 

Tips:

Schedule conferences with your child's teacher.   Check your child’s homework for completion/date due.  Encourage your child to be responsible for his/her academic work and behavior.  Continue the preparation for middle school.  Each grading period is important.  The first two reporting periods can affect your child's middle school registration.  If you are thinking about applying to another middle school begin looking at the applications on line.


November 2023

November 13th- Round 1 Magnet School Application Opens

November 22nd - November 24th - Thanksgiving Break Student Holiday

Tips:

You soon will have a middle school student.  Check your child’s homeworkSchedule a daily study time during the holidays.  Participate in middle school transition activities.   


December 2023

December 1st at 4pm- Round 1 Magnet Application Closes

December 19th- End of 2nd Grading Period

December 20th- January 3rd Winter Holidays

Tips:

Winter Break is this month.  Remind your child to complete activities in reading, writing, and math daily.  


January 2024

January 10th -  Report Cards 

January 25th- Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Student Holiday

Tips:

Review your child’s homework assignments.  Schedule teacher conferences as needed.  Encourage your child to be responsible. Middle school is coming!


February 2024

February 19th - President's Day: Student Holiday

Tips:

Schedule parent/teacher conferences as needed.  Make sure your child is completing assignments.  Make sure that he/she is studying every day.    Continue your preparation for middle school.


March 2024

March 14th - End of 3rd Grading Period

March 15th-22nd: Spring Break

March 29th - Student Holiday

Tips:

The countdown to middle school continues.  Make sure your child is on target academically.  Schedule conferences as needed.  Get ready for middle school.


April 2024

April 1st - Report Cards

April 19th- Student Holiday

Participate in all transition activities.   Schedule conferences as needed.  Make sure your child is on target academically and behaviorally.


May 2024

School Recognition Programs

May 21st- Half Day 

May 22nd- End of Grading Period/Last Day of School/Half Day

Tips:

 Attend your child’s fifth grade Awards Day.  Know the middle school your child is assigned to.  Check on the dress code for middle school.  Get a summer reading list for your child.  Have a scheduled study time for your child during the summer.    

Update your child’s health information with an exam and immunization check.  Encourage your child to do reading, writing, and mathematics activities daily.  Check with the middle school counselor related to information they need for the Fall.  Make sure your address and telephone number are current at the middle school.  Make sure that you know the dress code for your middle school.  Get your child’s bus schedule if needed.  Check on the requirements for Physical Education.  Continue to encourage your child.  Make an appointment for you and your child to visit his/her middle school.
