Course Description:

English II introduces literary and informational texts that create awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity. The course is designed to prepare students for the rigor of the South Carolina State Standards for College and Career Readiness.

Materials:

1 One inch three ring binder 5 Notebook dividers (Label as the following; Grammar, Literature, Writing, Vocabulary, and PSAT/Skills)

College rule notebook paper 2 Folders (journal writing) with prongs Pens (blue and black ink)

Textbook: Collections Grade 10 (Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt)

Grades and Grading:

Student progress is assessed over each nine week period. Evaluations consist of class work and homework assignments, unit tests, comprehension quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, and various writing assignments, with a research emphasis. Students’ progress is reported as a grade based on the Greenville County grading scale:

100-90% = A 989-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60 = D 59-0% = F

Important School Policies:

Please review these at home to make sure they are clear:

· Homework:

-20% off 1 day late

-50% off until the test

· Make-up Work: Students will have five days upon returning from an absence to arrange for missed assignments with their teacher. Note: The student is responsible for these arrangements and for contacting the teacher.

· Attendance: Students may accumulate 10 absences for year-long classes. Any exceeding these limits will require a doctor’s note, or the student will fail the class, (regardless of grade average).

· Tardy Policy:

-On the 8th to 10th tardy, student will receive lunch detention.

-On the 11th to 15th tardy, student will receive in-school suspension.

-On the 15th or higher tardy, student will receive out of school suspension.

· Bathroom Policy: All students receive three passes per class, quarter.

-4th pass – phone call home

-5th and each subsequent pass – teacher detention

· Cell Phones: Cell phones may be used before and after school and in the Commons during lunch. Such devices are to be powered off during the course of the school day. When these items are seen or heard, the student will be warned once. Additional offenses will result in student receiving a referral for failure to obey. Therefore, students are discouraged from bringing these items to school. Students will receive ISS or OSS for additional cell phone offenses.

Communication with Parents:

Parents will be contacted several times during the school year throughout the school year in a variety of modes: progress reports/report cards, telephone calls and/or emails concerning student behavior and/or work ethic, and parent and teacher conferences. The website is also a great tool to use to be up-to-date on the class syllabus, weekly planner, and homework assignments.

Cheating/Plagiarism:

No cheating or plagiarism will be tolerated. This applies to any and all assignments. Cheating or copying another’s work results in a 0% credit for an assignment. Students will also be expected to sign an honor code in every class.

Classroom Expectations:

Student should desire to learn.

Student should ask questions when he or she is not grasping or comprehending the material or instruction(s).

Student should display respect to administrators, teacher(s), and peers.

Student should arrive to class on time and sit in assigned seats.

Student should bring all pertinent materials to class.

Student should submit homework at the beginning of the class period.

Student should stay alert and listen to instruction.

Student should read board daily and adhere to assignments on board and website.

Student should refrain from excessive talking, sleeping, eating, drinking (other than water), and using cell phone in class.

Student should refrain from using profane words in class, Those profane words do include “sucks,’ and “crap” but are not limited to just those words
