Course Description

Employability Education is a semester course for 9th -12th-grade students, designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for the dual role of the wage earner and family member. Knowledge of the factors involved in these roles is vital for preparing students to make informed and competent decisions regarding career and family life. This class meets every day for 90 minutes and has no prerequisites. This course focuses on the development of the transferable skills students need in job and life situation tasks. These skills include basic academic skills, thinking skills, personal qualities, use of resources, interpersonal skills, and using information.

Instructional Philosophy

The Employability Education I course is designed for students to explore interests, research careers, create resumes, practice interview skills, and conduct informational interviews and job shadows. This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental attitudes, behaviors, and habits needed to obtain and maintain employment and make career advancements. Students will participate in school-based learning activities including work ethic development, job-seeking skills, decision-making skills, and self-management. Students will begin a career portfolio as part of the requirements for the South Carolina High School Credential. Formal career planning and development of knowledge regarding transition planning begins in this course and continues

throughout the strand of the employability education courses.

This course is divided into eight units. Below is an outline of the unit sequence and the state standards for each unit.  A cumulative assessment is included at the end of the semester to determine student mastery of the content, counting for 20% of the course grade.
