Read with your child to model fluency but also encourage him/her to have reading time alone as well – both are important at this stage.

Expect your child to answer questions using a complete sentence. This is a small step that will enhance your conversations, while also providing your child, early on, with a skill needed in writing later on. If the skill is mastered verbally now, it will be an easy transition into writing at a later stage.

Talk to your child about his/her day at school. Ask questions that focus on details with your child, not just, “How was your day?” Read the newsletter to know what the current focus is and use that to dig deeper – “What did you learn about mammals today?” “What was the hardest thing about adding two-digit numbers?”
