For Parents

The Educational Support room is available to students who qualify for Special Education services under the federal law IDEA. Unlike the middle school programs, the Educational Support program at Greer High School is a tutorial program, which means that we do not teach the student a particular subject (English or Math), but we assist students in any or all subjects in which they are enrolled. We provide units of instruction on several necessary skills in addition to the tutorial support. Some of these skills include organization, note-taking, following directions, career exploration, time management, self-advocacy, character education, and test preparation.

The student receives an elective unit for the Educational Support course, which contributes towards their elective quota for graduation. Our goal is to assist each student in becoming an independent, self-confident graduate. The Educational Support program requires the cooperation of the student as more responsibility is placed on the student in the high school years. Teachers will stay in contact with the student’s general education teachers on a regular basis and also communicate with the parent regarding any concerns that teachers have regarding their student.

During the first ten minutes of class, students are expected to complete the daily activity, have their homework planner checked, and decide with the teacher on how they will spend their class time. The remainder of each class period is individualized based on each student’s needs and their assignments from the general education classes. Students are welcome to study, read, complete homework, or work on projects during their Resource time; however, they are encouraged to ask questions and get explanations on concepts that they do not understand. The daily activity will be completed at the beginning of each class period to help remediate student's basic skills in reading, writing, and math or to discuss study skills, transition options, and self-advocacy. Students will review their grades weekly with the Educational Support teacher and students will be encouraged to reflect on problems and successes in classes. One class period per week will be designated as “free day”, in which students may catch up on missing work, work to improve social skills, use the computer, or play cooperative games.

Students will study effective study habits and discover their learning styles during the first few weeks of school. The second, third, and fourth nine weeks will be spent working on test preparation skills, which includes focusing on reading, math, writing, and organization. Students will prepare for the SAT, ACT, and End-of-Course exams. Careers and self-advocacy skills will also be explored during the second and third nine-weeks. The career exploration will involve a career survey, discussion of career choices, and exploration on the SC-KUDER programs that are available through the school library. The self-advocacy unit will teach students how to effectively and appropriately ask for assistance both in school and after they graduate.

Students will have ample time for individual assistance and tutoring for their Resource class time, but must complete the remainder of their homework assignments at home in order to pass their classes. Please help me in stressing the importance of studying and homework completion to your child. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child or the Educational Support program at Greer High.
