Woodmont Middle School Promo.mp4

Welcome to Agricultural Education at Woodmont Middle School! This is the fourth year agriculture courses have been offered at Woodmont Middle. This is an elective course that falls under the umbrella of Career and Technical Education. Agriculture classes are available to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. 8th graders also have the opportunity to take the year-long agriculture course, which they can receive high school credit for. Each course is outlined at the bottom of this page. In addition to agriculture classes, a complete Agricultural Education Program also offers students the opportunity to be involved in the National FFA Organization and Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs).

More about FFA:

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, is the student leadership organization associated with agriculture courses. This organization allows students to learn leadership skills, hands-on technical skills, professionalism, and communication skills no matter if they want to work in the agriculture industry or not. Woodmont Middle FFA will allow students to achieve these skills through camps, conferences, conventions, competitions, and community service projects. Dues to join are $20 (which includes a free t-shirt). Please let me know if $20 is not achievable. I am happy to work with you!

More about SAEs:

The Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is a project that each student completes outside of class during the duration of their time in the agriculture course. It gives students the opportunity learn more about the agriculture industry in a hands-on way. This project is based around the resources they have available and what portion of agriculture they want to explore. The SAE project is required and counts as a grade for agriculture class. We will do most brainstorming and planning for SAEs in class at the beginning of the semester. A total of 10 hours should be devoted to the student's SAE project each semester.

About Ms. Martin: I am Katie Martin, the agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor at WMS.  I am from Pendleton, SC and graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Agricultural Education in May 2020. Agriculture is close to my heart because I grew up on a dairy farm and showed livestock. FFA is close to my heart because I had an amazing experience as student member; I grew personally, as a leader, and as a professional. I have served FFA in many ways: as the South Carolina FFA State President, Clemson Collegiate FFA Secretary, and National FFA Organization conference facilitator. Serving as the Woodmont Middle FFA Advisor will be my most rewarding and exciting FFA experience, by far. I look forward to teaching students about agriculture and helping them develop as a leader! I am excited to work with the Woodmont community to make the Woodmont Middle Agricultural Education program well-know and appreciated!

The following are major concepts and units that will be covered in each agriculture course taught at WMS.

6th Grade Introduction to Agriculture: defining agriculture, plants and animals in agriculture, communication skills, technology in agriculture, ecology and conservation, careers in agriculture.
