Purpose

The National Art Honor Society was established by the National Art Education Association in 1978 for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in the visual arts.

Benefits

    • Recognize students who have shown outstanding ability in the field of visual art.
    • Fostering excellence and a dedicated spirit in the pursuit of visual art.
    • Bringing art to the attention of the school and community through service.
    • Increasing the awareness of art as viable content within the total school curriculum.

Membership Criteria

The criteria for membership to NAHS emphasizes outstanding artistic scholarship and service to the school and community through the development of artistic endeavors, together with a strong moral character.

    • An overall GPA of 2.5 (or higher)
    • A grade of ‘B’ (or higher) in all art classes taken
    • Positive discipline record

Students work toward earning a NAHS Honor Chord worn at graduation.

To remain a member in good standing, a member must

    • pay yearly dues ($10.00)
    • complete 10 service hours in the visual arts each year
    • attend 80% of all meetings and official functions

College scholarships are available to those who wish to apply.

National By-Laws

Section 1. A chapter may wish to include bylaws to amplify sections of its

constitution. Bylaws do not need to be approved by the National

Council if they are consistent with regulations outlined in the

constitution. A current copy of the local chapter bylaws must be

filed with NAEA.

Section 2. To remain a member in good standing, a member must pay dues

and complete 10 service hours in the visual arts each year.

Section 3. Annual dues of $ 10.00 will be collected from each member.

Section 4. Attendance is required at meetings to maintain membership and

privileges.

Section 5. All members must participate in 80% of our projects, activities, and

fundraisers.

Section 6. For the NAHS and NJAHS officers, attendance is also required at

any executive meetings called outside of the regularly scheduled

meetings.

Section 7. To graduate with NAHS honors and earn the right to wear a cord,

pin, or tassel at graduation, a member must remain in good

standing until the graduation date.

Section 8. Members must retain a 3.0 in ALL *ART* classes.

Section 9. Members must have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative average in all

other subjects.

Section 10. Members may remain active during such time when there are no

visual arts on their class schedules as long as they fulfill all of the

other requirements each year.

Section 11. In the event of an infraction of rules, a review by the officers and

sponsors will be conducted. If the individual in question is an officer,

he/she will not participate in the decision-making process.

This applies to all community laws as well as school and chapter.

SERVICE HOURS ACTIVITIES

The following are examples of ways in which NAHS students may earn service hours:

    • Assist with the setting up and ‘manning’ tables
      1. Registration
      2. Open House
      3. Magnet Open House
      4. Night of the Arts
      5. Spring Showcase
      • Create and curate art displays around school
      1. Media Center
      2. Night of the Arts
      3. Spring Showcase
      4. Admin offices
      • Assist with display outside of school
      • District Show
      • District Office displays
      • Other
      • Work with teachers in designing/creating classroom displays, etc.
      1. “Artist for Hire”
      2. Design and create programs for shows/activities/games
      • Volunteer at local community arts events
      1. Art in the Park
      2. Artisphere
      3. Other
      • Sponsor arts-related activities/events around school
      1. YAM (‘Youth Art Month’ in March)
      2. National Arts Education Week (Sept)
      3. Offer group activities to students/staff
      4. “make-and-take” art sessions
      • Fund-Raising Activities
      1. Raising funds for visual art program
      2. Raising funds for chapter activities (field trips, supplies, etc.)
      3. Raising funds to off-set cost of Graduation Honor Cords, pins, certificates, and other chapter items.
      • Design and create a murals in hallways.
      • Design and create a t-shirt (or other items) for the chapter to sell.
