Course Description: This course is the study of functions, patterns, relations, and concepts of number systems. This course focuses on the development of the student's ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic workplace problems. Emphasis is on active participation through appropriate project work, laboratory activities, group and individual assignments, discussion, practice, and exposition. Hand-held graphing calculators are recommended for instruction and assessment. The standards for this course were developed by the State Department of Education.

Student Participation: The student is expected to take part in the class, doing the assigned work, paying attention, asking and answering questions. You can expect to have assignments every class period. Use your time wisely in class so that you can acquire help.

Course Goals: This course will intensely develop problem solving skills and critical thinking skills necessary to advance to Algebra 3 or Pre-calculus. A combination of lecture, cooperative learning, drill and practice and technology will be used throughout the course to assist in each student’s success.

Power Standards: (For the full standards, see the standards page)

  • Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions
  • Creating Equations
  • Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities
  • Structure and Expressions
  • Building Functions
  • Interpreting Functions
  • Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential
  • Complex Number System

Processing Standards: (For the full standards, see the standards page)

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Reason both contextually and abstractly.
  • Use critical thinking skills to justify mathematical reasoning and critique the reasoning of others.
  • Connect mathematical ideas and real-world situations through modeling.
  • Use a variety of mathematical tools effectively and strategically.
  • Communicate mathematically and approach mathematical situations with precision.
  • Identify and utilize structure and patterns.

Steps for Success:

  • Minimize Absences: In many cases the material demands a verbal explanation that can only be truly delivered adequately with classroom discussion. Your regular attendance is important for success in this course.
  • Be consistent in turning in homework... Daily: Those students who lag behind on their daily homework responsibilities struggle significantly in mastering the subject matter.
  • Manage your time wisely: Managing your in-class and out-of-class time wisely can enable you to be better prepared and less stressed.
  • Organization: Being neat and organized in your work will help you in problem solving and minimize mistakes. YOU WILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL ON WORK THAT HAS LITTLE ORGANIZATION.
  • Use the internet: There are a number of great websites that can assist you. Run a search on the topics we are covering in class.

Pacing Guide:

Major Assessments and Projects: Each unit will end in a unit test. Two major projects will be assigned during each semester.

Assessments and Grading Policy:

  • Quarter Grades
    • Major Assessments (Tests and Projects) 60%
    • Minor Assessments (Quizzes) 30%
    • Homework (Homework/Classwork) 10%
  • Semester Grades
    • Quarter Grades (Q1 and Q2 or Q3 and Q4) 40% Each
    • Exam (Midterm or Final) 20%
  • Final Grade
    • Semester Grades (S1 and S2) 50% Each
