Social Studies

Course Description

Students will complete a study of South Carolina and United States history up to the present, with concepts in government, geography, and economics integrated chronologically. Students will use context, causation, cause and effect, periodization, continuities and change, and evidence to develop a full understanding of South Carolina’s past and present. Students will use many methods of learning including technology, primary and secondary sources, projects, and inquiry.

These standards will have students explore history through 6 Historical Thinking Skills

  1. Comparison- Utilize multiple characteristics of historical developments to create a comparative analysis.

  2. Causation- Identify and compare significant turning points, including the related causes and effects that affect historical continuity and change.

  3. Periodization- Utilize significant turning points to justify the historical narrative of a time period.

  4. Context- Explain how historical themes are used to determine context when analyzing significant events

  5. Continuities and Changes- Analyze significant turning points and theme-based patterns of continuities and changes within a period of time.

  6. Evidence- Identify, interpret, and utilize different forms of evidence, including primary and secondary sources, used in an inquiry-based study of history.

Class Expectations:

  1. Students will stay on-task and participate in class.

  2. Students will come prepared to class with their binder, a pen or pencil, and ready to learn .

  3. Students will be on-time to class.

  4. Students will enter, pull out their notebooks, and start on bellwork located on the board.

ELearning Expectations

  1. Turn the video on and show your face. Seeing you is important for teachers to know how you are doing.

  2. Mute your screen when you are not speaking.

  3. Be prepared. Make sure you have materials you might need within reach, have completed all assignments, and have your questions written.

  4. Please dress/act school appropriately during video conferencing. School rules apply in the virtual setting.

  5. Be aware of your surroundings and what is in the background of your screen.

  6. This is a classroom, so please limit all distractions around you.

  7. Anything on the internet can be copied so follow GCS’s electronic device policies. Remember, you could be subject to disciplinary action if you break one or more of these rules.

  8. Students should NOT use Google Meet without a teacher present.

  9. The chat feature within Google Meet should be used for relevant class discussions only.

Missed work/Make-up policy:

For excused absences: It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about missed work upon returning to class. The student must return completed work to the teacher within no more than five days. If the student has a prearranged absence, he/she must get the make-up work prior to or immediately after the absence.

For unexcused absences: According to school policy, make-up work after an unexcused absence will be accepted only with the consent of the teacher and the principal.

Attendance and Tardy Policy

Attendance will be recorded daily. Students who are absent will collect their missed work from a folder at the back of the room. For class tardies, I will follow the Greenville County School District’s tardy policy.

Behavior

All school and district guidelines apply inside the classroom. Procedures for my classroom are consistent in every class. Procedures are reviewed with the students during the first week of school in every classroom.

Evaluations and Revision of Syllabus:

The teacher reserves the right to change the sequence of units to relate to current events. The teacher may also decrease or extend the length of a unit to accommodate student learning. The teacher may also add additional information. Thus, the sequence of unites may need to be changed for the development of the student
