Sports Medicine 3 H

Sports Medicine 3  is now an Honors class.

It is offered as the 3rd or 4th class in the Health Science -Sports Medicine Pathway.  If you are interested in being on the sidelines of games and understanding more about modalities used in athletic training and physical therapy this is the class for you! Please see Mrs. Armistead if you are interested - we need 15 students to be able to offer this for 2024/2025 school year.  (Work Based Learning is also an option)

COURSE OBJECTIVE

Sports Medicine 3 emphasizes the student’s ability to apply concepts from previous Sports Medicine course work to real-world situations and scenarios. A priority will be placed on understanding the current research and evidence based practices affecting the practice of sports medicine professionals. Students will develop policies, procedures, and guidelines based on these aspects, as well as explore detailed treatment and rehabilitation procedures for common athletic injuries. Students are expected to participate in clinical situations either at school with their athletic department or in an outside clinical setting for real world experience. (take from State Standards)

All hands-on to wrap up NATA Month: SM3 practiced fiberglass casting; taking what they know about ace wrapping and taping and now applying it to casting - some of the many skills of athletic trainers.

Cryotherapy

Ice buckets with classmates

Plaster Casting

Thermotherapy

Heat packs in class are much more relaxing then the ice bucket, learning modalities by trying them.

Looking forward to bring this class back.  Due to COVID restrictions on healthcare facilities we have not had this class in 2 years and it was taught by a pervious teacher before that.  There is expected observation hours as part of state standards.
