Course Description

Sports Nutrition is an elective class that enables students to examine the relationship between physical activity, proper nutrition, sports performance and overall wellness. Students will learn what foods are needed for healthy lifestyles and peak performance, as well as how to prepare nutritious foods. This course strengthens health promotion and disease prevention through increased knowledge of nutrition and physical activity.

Instructional Philosophy

The Family and Consumer Science curriculum is meant to be experienced. In my classes this is done through, cooking labs, fitness days and various other independent & collaborative efforts. I act as a facilitator as a means of presenting students with the foundation of learning and it is up to them to start the connection process and reach deeper meaning. I am there through every step of the process to guide, lead, and provide clarity. Please assist me by asking your child what they have learned in class and having them show you examples when you are out in the world.

Textbook

90% of the class will be taught with teacher created materials. The topic of Sports Nutrition can get technical very fast. It is a class that connects biology, kinesthetics, sports medicine and nutrition. I always remind my students that they are welcome to "Google" class questions but the content will not relate as it is taught in this class. It is my goal to make these technical topics digestible for all levels of learning.

Assessment/Grade Calculation:

  • Student’s work is graded using a standard percentage system.

    • 60% of the overall grade will be based on major grades and,

    • 40% of the overall grade will be made up of minor grades.

Grading Scale:

A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 & below

*Students are expected to save all materials from the class to help prepare for the mid-term and final exam review. This includes all notes, graded assignments and test*

Homework Policy:

  • All work can be completed during the scheduled class time. All will be completed online using Google Docs or various other digital platforms. Students will be completing at home fitness assignments. There will be adequate class time to complete these assignments. Note this is subject to change

Make-up Work:

  • It is the student’s responsibility to make up work missed. Absent work is easy to locate and complete from the Google Classroom platform. If a student is absent before a scheduled test, and no new material has been covered, the student will be expected to take the test on the scheduled date.

Late Work:

  • Late work will be accepted, but will be penalized 10% of the grade each day it is not turned in without excused absence. If material is not turned in by the fifth day the student will receive a zero, and will not be allowed to make up work. I typically offer one make up assignment per quarter to provide your child the opportunity to make up for a missing minor assignment.

Student Behavior/Attendance & Tardy Policy:

  • Students are to follow all GCSD guidelines. For more information click here

  • Policies will evolve and update as the school year continues.

Communication with Parents:

  • Parent communication is primarily through email. If you have an email address you prefer please let me know. Parents are notified each grading period of their students' progress in the class.
