General Course Description and Objectives:

Course Description:

In this course students will learn various exercises that will enhance all major muscle groups, and several workout programs to develop their muscle tone/strength/flexibility. This course will also give each student the opportunity to learn the proper techniques to utilize in their personal fitness later in life, to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the year, the students will have accomplished the following skills:

1. Develop an understanding of various lifts that will strengthen specific muscles in their bodies.

2. Perform all lifts using proper form and techniques.

3. Demonstrate the correct safety/spotting techniques of a partner.

4. Develop an increase in strength and flexibility.

5. Develop a positive self-worth within them.

6. Learn various workout programs to enhance tone and strength.

7. Learn how to load; unload & store weights correctly during class time.

8. Develop a work-out plan including all of the health/fitness components


South Carolina Physical Education Standards

Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. (Psychomotor Domain)

I. Unit Title: Personal Fitness

Objective: Students will engage in physical activity, at such a level, that they will improve their overall health

Unit Assessment: Written Test and Various Skills Test


II. Unit Title: Wt. Lifting

Objective: Students will become proficient in various types of lifts

Unit Assessment: Written Test and Various Skills Test

Materials:

  • Pencil/Pen, Notebook, Athletic Attire, Socks, and Gym Shoes

Grading Policy and Assessments:

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 59 and below


Quarter:

Major Assessments: 60% (minimum 3-4)

Minor Assessments: 40% (minimum 12)

Minor assessments will consist of:

Vocabulary Test, Fitness Worksheets, Daily Participation, Notebook, Quizzes

Major assessments will consist of:

Skills Test, Fitness Log, Unit Test

an EOCEP Course. The S.C. State Department of Education mandates that an EOC exam counts as 20% of the yearly grade.


Attendance Policy:

School Policy: To receive credit for a course, students must not miss more than five (5) days for a semester course (1/2 unit course), and not miss more than ten (10) days for a yearlong course (1 unit course), as well as meet all minimum requirements for the course. Please review the Student Handbook for details.

-In the event a student must miss or have class participation modified for 1 to 3 days due to a medical condition, a written note from a parent or legal guardian is required.

-The note written by parent/legal guardian should include the following information:

Phone number to reach parent/guardian

- More than three days on a medical excuse will require a note from a physician, indicating student’s limitation and length of modification.

What to do if you miss a class:

Excused Absence: You have five days to make up work. If work is not made up you will receive a zero.

Unexcused Absence: You have five days to make up work. If work is not made up you will receive a zero.

Academic and Behavioral Expectation:

Behavior Rules:

-Students need to be in the designated area prior to the tardy bell.

-Follow directions, be prepared and pay attention.

-Do not leave the gym without permission.

-If you need water, you must get permission from a teacher.

-Respect school property. Keep all equipment, bleachers, gym, and locker rooms in good condition.

-Book–bags will be stored in a designated area prior to a P.E class activity.

-No food, drinks, or gum in either gym at any time.

-No grabbing onto the basketball goals.

-No horseplay in the locker rooms or gym.

-No electronic devices.

-Students are required to follow the instructions of any of the P.E staff.


Class Expectations and Requirements:

-Students are expected to stay with their class at all times.

-Students will be expected to participate actively in Physical Education class daily.

-Students will use restroom prior to the tardy bell or while dressing out.

-Students get 5-6 minutes to change clothes at the beginning and the end of class.

-Students go directly to their assigned spot in the gym for roll call when leaving the locker room.

-After gym class, students will dress quickly and wait for the bell to exit the locker room/designated area.

-Inappropriate shoes will not be allowed on the gym floor. If a student does not have proper shoes, they will not be considered as dressed for that day and may not participate.

-The P.E department is not responsible for valuables, leave them at home.

-Any lost or defaced equipment will incur a charge on the student’s debt record (Example: Locks)


Discipline Policy:

Physical Education classes will follow the Southside High 5-Step Discipline Plan as follows:

Step 1: Student Warning

Step 2: Parent Contact/2nd warning

Step 3: Teacher Consequence -ISS/Lunch detention

Step 4: Parent Conference

Step 5: Referral to Administrator
