Syllabus

Course Descriptions

The purpose of this course is to serve students from arithmetic to symbolic mathematical reasoning. Students will develop a better understanding of writing, solving, and graphing problems involving linear and quadratic equations (including systems of two linear equations in two unknowns). By the end of this course students will have an understanding of graphic and scientific calculators.

In our applied trades course we will be applying standards from math, science, and physics. Students will be applying what they learn in the classroom about how simple machines work in real world situations. These situations include disassembling and reassembling bicycles, constructing each of the 6 simple machines and analyzing how each machine makes work easier, and working on actual engines to problem solve what the engine needs to run.

Course Content Standards/Objectives

My primary goal is to provide instruction that will enable my students to meet their IEP goals and experience academic success in their content classes. Using grade-level standards and research-based instruction, my classes will be designed to improve social skills, develop skills that translate into the workplace, and improve knowledge of mathematical concept. My classroom management structure will reinforce decision-making skills, personal accountability, anger management, self-control, and self-advocacy. I will use an assortment of instructional strategies to render the curriculum accessible to all of my students; including, but not limited to:

-- Whole class instruction

-- Small group instruction

-- Individualized instruction

Communicating with Parents

Parents are advised of their student's academic progress through progress reports at the midpoint of each quarter and report cards at the end of each quarter. There will also be occasional newsletters sent home with students informing parents of important upcoming events and accomplishments their child might have achieved. Parents should also expect occasional phone calls based on their students behavior throughout the year. I enjoy giving calls of praise to parents so you can expect more of those than calls about negative behaviors. And as always if you would like to get in touch with me you can always call the school.

Grading

Your student's grade will be determined based on three components: Classroom participation, Minor grades (daily work), Major grades. Depending on the amount of content covered there will be 3-5 major grades each quarter.

GCSD Grading Scale:

A 90 - 100

B 80 -- 89

C 70 -- 79

D 60 -- 69

F Below 60

Evaluations

Standardized tests:

Students whom are enrolled in Algebra I or Biology I will take the End Of Course Exam upon completion of the course

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) – Winter (8th Grade)

Mastery Connect: Fall, Winter, Spring

SC-Alt (South Carolina Alternative State Assessment) – Spring

Non-Standardized Evaluations:

Published and teacher-made tests are administered periodically to measure student progress
