BRYSON MIDDLE SCHOOL- SYLLABUS FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND LIFE FITNESS COURSES

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: The middle school physical education program is designed as a prerequisite for the high school’s program. Students will be in this course for one semester during the school year. There will be a heavy emphasis on physical fitness and an informed, healthy lifestyle. The students will participate in the national "Fitness Gram" test as required by the State Department of Education. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities and will be expected to become age-level proficient in at least two of the activities. Additionally, Health Education at Bryson Middle School is integrated within the semester. The course will focus on life skills and activities to enhance the students’ ability to make healthy choices throughout life. Aside from a general health education, all boys and girls enrolled in Physical Education are instructed separately for the Sexuality Education portion of the curriculum requirements. *Life Fitness will not participate in health education and sex education*

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENTS: Physical education/Life Fitness instructors will teach and equal portion of the students in the school with their ages ranging from ten to fifteen, all grades inclusive. Our student body is made up of the full socio-economic spectrum with the majority coming from rural, middle class working families.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE STANDARDS

Standard 1 The student will demonstrate competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2 The student will demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performing of physical activities.

Standard 3 The student will participate regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4 The student will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5 The student will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical-activity settings.

Standard 6 The student will demonstrate awareness that physical activity provides the opportunity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE HEALTH EDUCATION COURSE STANDARDS

Standard 1: The student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion to enhance health.

Standard 2: The student will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

Standard 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

Standard 4: The student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 5: The student will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Standard 6: The student will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Standard 7: The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and to avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 8: The student will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and consumer health.

The text will be used only in class. Hand-outs and other supplemental materials will be distributed to the students as needed.

MAJOR ASSESSMENTS PER SEMESTER MAY INCLUDE:

Sports/Fitness assessments, written assessments on sports knowledge and health education instruction, Sexual Education packet

GRADING SCALE:

Students in Physical Education/Life Fitness will be graded on the numeric scale below:

PE scale: Major-50 % ( Participation, Tests, Projects) Minor-50% (Dressing out, Classwork, Skills)

Life Fitness scale: Major-50 % ( Participation, Tests, Projects) Minor-50% (Dressing out, Classwork, Skills)

Failure to dress out- 20 point deduction each day

Failure to participate in class- a 20 point deduction each day

Failure to turn in written report is a 10-point deduction each day

HOMEWORK:

Occasionally, students will be given homework that will correspond with subjects we will cover in class. Please make sure that all major assignments (i.e. Sex Education packet) are turned in completed and on time.

MAKE-UP WORK:

Ample time will be allowed for students to make-up work that was missed while they were absent. Any written work must be hand written and can be made up within five school days.

RULES FOR BEHAVIOR:

1. Students should come to class on time.

2. Students should bring necessary materials to class. They will be expected to dress out and participate in class each day.

3. Students should keep their hands, feet, and all other objects to themselves.

4. Students should respect themselves and others.

5. Students should follow all school rules.

CONSEQUENCES:

1st step: a warning is given

2nd step: notification of the parent/guardian of the child breaking a rule

3rd step: Last warning

4th step: Referral - Disruptive behavior will result in immediate referral or administrative intervention.

CLASS PROCEDURES: Students will be expected to arrive to class and in the locker room by the time the tardy bell rings. Five minutes are allowed for dressing out in the proper attire (shorts/sweatpants, t-shirt/sweatshirt, socks and athletic shoes). Students will be allowed to take water/restroom breaks during locker room time and warm-up activities only. Once students have reported for the start of class, special permission will be granted on an “as-needed” basis.

GYM UNIFORM ATTIRE: Plain / Bryson/Hillcrest red t-shirts, solid black bottoms, and athletic shoes.

Not allowed: shirts and bottoms with inappropriate words/images, leggings, jeggings, shorts above mid-thigh, non-athletic shoes (heels, sandals, Sperry’s or any type of boat shoe, boots.)

Locks and Lockers: all students will be assigned a lock and locker at the beginning of each semester. At any point that a lock has been lost or damaged beyond repair, that student will be charged a $7.00 replacement fee.

COMMUNICATION: Parental communication will be done in a variety of ways. Phone calls, personal contact, and notes and letters will be sent home.
