Course Description:

English IV introduces literary and informational texts reflecting a broad range of writing by authors outside the United States, and places a strong emphasis on literary analysis and writing, vocabulary, written and spoken expression, and research skill. The course is designed to prepare students for the rigor of the South Carolina State Standards for College and Career Readiness.

Grading Policy: 

This course carries CP weight. Advanced courses differ in that there is additional rigor for the more advanced student preparing for university course work.

Categories and Percentages:

Majors 60%

Minors 40%

Late Work Policy: 

The late policy applies to major and minor grades. You will lose 10 points for every day that your work is late. On the fifth day, you will receive a zero. This does not include homework, you may not submit homework.

Missed Work/Make-Up Policy: 

Check the pacing guide in Google Classroom to see what information/assignments were covered in class. You will have five days with an excused absence to make up assessments and other missed work. Please schedule a time to make missed assessments your first day back in class. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and what you need to make up. Please ask for makeup work before class, after class, or during other quiet times. 

Riverside has initiated a re-do policy.  You are allowed to re-do one major assignment. Once you know what assessment you would like to re-do please complete the form on Google Classroom and make a note of the cut-off dates for each quarter.  I will take the average the re-do and the original grade.

Behavior Expectations and Consequences:

• I am instructed to close the door at the bell. If you are not in the classroom, you will be considered tardy.

• We will BEGIN CLASS at the bell.  We will END CLASS when I tell you to put your things away.  (Consider, if we ended class 5 minutes early each day; that would equal 900 minutes by the end of the year. 900 minutes = 15 hours = 3 weeks of this class)

• Students will be given 5 passes per semester to use at their discretion.  These passes may be turned back in on the day of your mid-term exam and also the final exam for up to 5 points per unused pass.

• Phones should be put away immediately at the tardy bell. Phones may only be used again when the teacher verbally ends class or asks you to use them during a lesson. At no time may students gather and watch videos, etc. on phones

• Stay in your ASSIGNED SEAT at all times. I place you in alphabetical order for clerical convenience.

• Remember to clean up around your desk each day. Please respect my desk and my personal belongings as I do yours.
