Sustainability

What is Sustainability?

Sustain

"Cause to continue for an extended period or without interruption."

- Oxford Dictionary

Sustainable Development

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

- Brundtland Commission, 1987

Sustainability is often approached with three overlapping areas of consideration:

  • Social
  • Economic
  • Environment

In business, this may be referred to as the Triple Bottom Line: People, Profit, Planet

The United Nations has established Sustainable Development Goals which they hope to reach by 2030. "They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice," according to the UN.

The Sustainability Lab and Library seeks to enhance DMCA student STEM and reading opportunities through new environmental lab equipment, literature and customized programming designed in partnership with the Saint Francis University Institute for Energy. It is built around locally relevant sustainability themes.
