Solar energy is one of the fastest growing sources of electricity and the price of installation continues to fall. According to a 2018 study by Lazard's, "in some scenarios, alternative energy [solar and wind] costs have decreased to the point that they are now at or below the marginal cost of conventional generation." The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected solar photovoltaic installer to be the fastest growing occupation between 2018 and 2028.

Currently, less than 1% of Pennsylvania's electricity is produced by solar. The state has set a goal of generating at least 10% of in-state electricity with solar by the year 2030. Johnstown's Vision 2025 has developed a framework for revitalizing Greater Johnstown, which includes a team to Re-Energize Johnstown through increased energy efficiency and the use of solar energy.
