One of the lessor known branches of our sport is Para (Paralympic) Swimming which is competition open to athletes with physical disabilities. While most of these athletes compete in conventional USA Swimming meets, para meets offer them a unique opportunity to compete in a setting that can ultimately lead to competing in the Paralympics.
Unfortunately, many these opportunities are under utilized across our sport and especially within the Southeastern Swimming LSC. To help, expand our sport to these athletes, our very own Coach Shantel has recently accepted the position of Southeastern Disability Chair. Through her position, she will be a driving force in opening up access to training, support and competition for potentially dozens of local athletes. One of which.... swims for Excel! Next week, Coach Shantel and her Daughter Emme will be traveling to Cincinatti to compete in the Bill Keating Memorial Para Swim meet held at Xavier University. While this will be her first para meet, we are super excited to have her representing Excel and can't wait to cheer her on!
USA Swimming Leadership Conference
During the same weekend that Excel traveled to the TNAQ meet Coach Daun was representing Excel at the USA Swimming Leadership Conference. Following an application process with USA Swimming, Daun was selected to attend the conference along with 16 other coaches from all over the country. The conference was held at the La Foret Conference & Retreat Center in the Black Forest, just north of Colorado Springs, CO.
The intention was to help coaches assess their current leadership style and skills and provide opportunities to learn new skills. It also was a fantastic way to connect with other coaches and learn from them. There was a wide variety of teams represented from large teams with multiple Olympic Trials qualifiers to small rural teams, one of which recently joined USA Swimming after having been an AAU team for years. According to Coach Daun, "It was such an amazing opportunity to talk with all of these different coaches and learn what they do, how they do it, and most importantly why they do it." She learned that regardless of their location in the country, all teams deal with some of the same challenges that Excel does, including facility issues, staff changes, scheduling challenges, etc.
Part of the weekend involved exploring the WHY behind what we do day in and day out as coaches. As Daun explained, "The overriding WHY for most everyone, including myself, was our swimmers and the impact we can have on their lives, both in and out of the pool. That WHY is what drives everything we do and how we lead."
In addition to the friendships that Daun made with the other coaches in attendance, she also had the opportunity to connect with several staff members from USA Swimming. "It was great to learn how much they are ready and willing to help us when we need it", said Daun. USA Swimming staff went out of their way to ensure that all the coaches had a great experience. Hopefully Daun and other Excel coaches can attend some of USA Swimming's future conferences.

All of our parent volunteers play a vital role in hosting meets. We simply could not host meets in your absence. While most jobs take little training or experience, meet officials go through an educational and training process that enables them to help officiate at all meets. In fact, our own Excel officials have outnumbered the host team officials in both our first two meets. We are very grateful to our officiating crew but are always looking for new members.
