Congratulations to all our swimmers who competed this last weekend to finish up the 2022-23 Short Course season. Our 15 and over swimmers went to Orlando to compete in the NCSA Junior Nationals which is the fastest spring meet in the country and second swims don't come easy.
On the boys side, Matthew Amodio dropped 6 more seconds in the 1,000 free to hit the NCSA time (he qualified in the 1,650) while both Max Boylan and Samuel Martin dropped time in the 100 Free. Michael Pruett shaved off .6 in the 200 Free. Jason Wang and Cam Richardson also had times drops in the 50 Breast and 200 Back respectively.
On the girls side, we had big swims from Lizzie Yon as she dropped over a second in both the 200 IM (2:04.72) and the 200 Breast (2:17.89). Finally, Gwen Bakker improved in three events! She dropped in 50 Fly (1.6 seconds) in the 200 Breast (.09 seconds) but the big news was in her 100 Breast. All season, Gwen has been chasing the elusive time of 1:03.19 which is Winter Junior cut. She had a heartbreak swim at High School States when she went 1:03.20 missing it by only .01! But in her last chance of the season, Gwen blew past the Winter Junior Cut and hit the Summer Junior cut with a team record swim of 1:02.66!
In Cary, our 14 and under swimmers lit it up placing 5th against some very stiff national competition. When the dust settled, we had set 5 new team records, 3 relays and 2 individuals, Gavin Fu in the 400 IM and 100 Breast while Zara Kocak added three new NCSA Cuts, 200 Free, 200 Fly and 400 IM, to her resume.
But big news at AGS was our depth across all age groups. For the first time we had relays, point scorers and even podiums in every age group. We have a meet report and full results below.
As we celebrate our historic first Triple Crown of Championships, we need to pause to reflect what this means for our program.
The term “Triple Crown” is used across sports and always to reflect an accomplishment higher than simply being a one-time champion. In cycling, it refers to winning the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the UCI Road World Championships Road Race in the same season. In 1999-2000 the University of Arkansas Men’s Track & Field programs became the first SEC team to ever to win the Triple Crown when they won NCAA championships in Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field and Outdoor Track & Field. And of course in 1912, Sir Barton became the first horse to win the Triple Crown by winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
In February, Excel Aquatics won the 8 & Under Championship, the Region 1 Championship and Southeastern Championship all in a span of only 8 days. However, our Triple Crown is unique in a very important way. In cycling, track, or horse racing, the Triple Crown is a celebration of the same athletes while for us, it’s won by distinctly different groups of athletes.
The 8 & Under Championship is the least predictable because it sees the most turnover from year to year. As a majority of the point scorers are 8 years old, typically each athlete gets only one year to help win that meet. The winning team is the one who has done the best job attracting, retaining and developing young swimmers. The scoreboard is a one-year snapshot of success and our title this year doesn’t reflect our chances of repeating next year. It does, however, bode well for future Region 1, SES and national championship teams.
The Region 1 meet, which has a qualifying standard, precludes those swimmers who have achieved a SES cut time. Swimmers in the 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and Open age groups, can only swim in an event in which they are still striving for, but have not yet hit, an SES “A” time standard. Therefore, athletes on this team typically come from our “2” level groups. With all our growth in the 2022-23 season, Teal 2, Junior 2, Varsity 2, and Senior 2 all expanded and it showed in the scores. Winning this meet, with our SES level swimmers sitting on the sidelines, reflects our investment in developing athletes. In fact, over half of our current National Team swimmers have come through the 2 levels.
Finally, the SES Championship meet is a third and entirely distinct group of swimmers. While there were 11 swimmers who qualified for the SES meet at Regionals, a large majority of the SES team were swimming their first Championship of the season. Winning the SES meet is a reflection of years of effort. The SES meet highlights those teams that have developed talent at all ages. Incredibly, of the 8 age groups this year, Excel won 4 of them and placed second in 3 more.
While we celebrate each Championship, the Triple Crown is special. By design, these 3 championships offer a spot for EVERY one of our Excel swimmers. Nobody had to ride the bench as everybody had a spot on 1 of our championship teams. What’s truly remarkable about the Triple Crown is that it requires a full-team focus. It demands that teams balance their energy on developing every age, every level and every swimmer.
Congratulations to our whole Excel Family for a truly remarkable accomplishment.
2032 Awards Ceremony
With this amazing 2022-23 season winding down, it's time to celebrate all our team's accomplishment at our annual awards ceremony. Clearview Baptist Church (Franklin, Rd, Franklin) has once again graciously opened their doors to us for 4:00pm on Sunday, April 16th. Everyone is invited so please make plans to attend!
USA Swimming's Virtual Club Championships
We are also pleased to announce that USA Swimming's Virtual Club Championship rankings are finally available. After a long season of being down, VCC is back up and we are happy to be sitting at the top of the SES again! Please check it out at here
Over the course of the short course season, our club will be tracking a series of recognition programs to help motivate our swimmers to succeed un a multitude of events. While ultimately these programs do reward success, they are designed to be achievable by any level of swimmers, not just those with the most experience. You can always find the running totals for each at the bottom of the Excel Extras.
IM Tough (8 and Under): Successfully complete the 50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Breast, 200 Free and 200 IM in a meet before the end of the short course season or their 9th birthday (whichever comes first) to win an "IM TOUGH" T-shirt.
IM Tough (9-10): Successfully complete the 100 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Free, 500 Free and 200 IM in a meet before the end of the short course season or their 11th birthday (whichever comes first) to win an "IM TOUGH" T-shirt.

Any family that has been with us for even one season will know that we love to use USA Swimming's Virtual Club Rankings as a way to track our progress within the Southeastern Conference but also against our competition on the national level. However, due to the new registration system at USA Swimming, they are unable to produce those rankings at this moment. Thankfully, we have another place to look at in the meantime.
SwimCloud.com is a website that ranks swim teams, both as a whole team and by age groups. Once on there, you can filter the rankings by gender and age group, and even by event. As you can see, Excel Aquatics is doing very well!
All of our parent volunteers play a vital role in hosting meets. We simply could not host meets in your absence. While most jobs take little training or experience, meet officials go through an educational and training process that enables them to help officiate at all meets. In fact, our own Excel officials have outnumbered the host team officials in both our first two meets. We are very grateful to our officiating crew but are always looking for new members.
