Weekly Updates

June 24th


Updates:

- PowerSchool is up to date. We finished the last few presentations this week and all grades have been uploaded.

- Exams are finished 👏

- Missing Books from my personal classroom library: Please encourage your child to check their backpacks and bedrooms for any books that belong to me. You can always check the inside of the cover; my name is stamped, often with a date (so I know when I purchased it). See below for an example:


Next Week:

- Monday: Activity Day! Your child should be prepared to be outside for the majority of the day. A water bottle, hat, sunscreen, running shoes and sportswear would be helpful.

- Tuesday: Last day of school, students will be following their regular timetable. Report Cards available in PowerSchool.


Note: a student in our homeroom lost their watch; it is blue in color and mechanical with a name engraved on the back. If your child has seen the watch, please let me know 🙂


June 10th


Updates:

- PowerSchool is up to date. The final marks remaining are for presentations, which take place next week (Wednesday-Friday)

- English 7 Final will take place on Thursday, June 23rd. Thre is no study guide for the test- it is reading. However, reviewing the different types of figurative language learned in class could be beneficial.


Next Week:

- Monday, June 13th - Heritage Park Field Trip. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for the day to be outside. As well, they will need a packed lunch and water bottle. See Ms.Schieder's google classroom for more specific information.

- Tuesday, June 14th- Track and Field Day. If your child has joined a track and field event, they will be gone all day for the meet.

- Wed-Friday, June 15 to 17th. Genius Hour Presentations!



May 27th


Updates:

- We started our Genius Hour projects; your child completed a proposal and explored how to create research questions that are: specific, fact-based, school appropriate and related to the topic. Today they shared their proposals with me and began their research. They are encouraged to complete research at home; notes need to be taken on lined paper and not in a word document- keep track of sources.


Next Week:

- We will continue with our research for Genius Hour and figure out how to share the information with our classmates (poster, canva, google slides, video, podcast etc)


Homework:

- Spend one-hour researching for genius hour project, writing jot notes of information on lined paper


May 22nd


Updates:

- We finished our final projects for Refugee, marks will be in PowerSchool in the coming weeks.

- if your child was absent due to an illness, I have provided lunch hours to complete their projects in the classroom or library (Tuesday, May 24th is the LAST day)

- Scholastic book orders were sent home; great chance to get some summer reading! Use the code RC175487 online or send $$$ to school 😀

- Check your email for a letter that outlines our last unit of study for the semester!


May 13th

- We started our final project for the novel Refugee this week

April 29th

Updates:

- We completed our final vocabulary test and novel test for the book Refugee (marks are in PowerSchool- how did your child do?)

- Next week we will start our cumulative project for the novel!

- We completed our final lesson for the reading strategy: Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences (Test on Wednesday, May 4th)

- Library exchange next week, be sure to bring back any books from home 📚

April 22nd


Updates:

- We completed ch.46-51 for our novel Refugee this week

- Activities completed include: Main Idea + Key Details, Vocabulary Ch.46-53 (10words), and a Six Word Memoir (ch.46-48)

- Vocabulary tests for ch.37-45 marks are located in Powerschool, how did your child do?

- Vocabulary test ch. ch.46-53 will be on Tuesday, April 26th

- Final Book test will be on Wednesday, April 27th


Homework:

- Update 40 book challenge reading log in google classroom.

- Read up to and including ch.51 of Refugee (posted in google classroom)

- Study for the vocabulary test (Remember that there might be some words from previous chapters on the test as well) and the final book test.


April 15th

- We completed ch.40-46 for our novel Refugee this week

- Activities completed include: Chapter Responses Main Idea + Key Details and Vocabulary Ch.46-53 (10words)

- Vocabulary test for ch.37-45 was postponed as I was away- rescheduled for Tuesday

Updates:

-We completed ch.10-15 for our novel Refugee this week. Students continued to apply their concept mapping skills to keep each character's setting and plot organized.

March 4th

Updates:

-We completed ch.1-9 for our novel Refugee this week. Students have been applying concept mapping skills to keep each character's setting and plot organized.

- I had an unexpected absence later in the week, so the vocabulary quiz was postponed

February 25th

Updates:

- We completed our pre-reading activities for Refugee and started reading the novel on Thursday

- Cool Runnings took place today, ask your child who won the race for grade 7!

- Pre-reading assignment in google classroom (was due Thursday), there are still 16 students who have not completed their activity

February 18th

Updates:

- We are finished our review of paragraph writing. Students completed a final assessment on Wednesday; marks will be posted mid-week in PowerSchool.

- We will be starting our second novel for the year- Refugee by Alan Gratz. This is one of my favourite books and I can't wait to start our pre-reading activities next week. Want more information on the book- click here.

-Homework: update 40 book challenge reading log in google classroom. Some students have been very diligent in keeping up with their reading logs outside of school. This is an ongoing assignment and should be re-visited bi-weekly.

- We are finishing our review of paragraph writing. Monday we will provide peer feedback. A final assessment will take place before the long weekend.

- We finished our learning cycle for figurative language; marks posted in PowerSchool

- We started looking at how we can enhance our paragraph writing, in particular, star ideas and details

Updates:

- We continued with our read-aloud A Stranger at Home (almost finished chapter 6)

- Finished our exploration of figurative language; test on Tuesday. Students will need to be able to define, identify, explain and write each kind of figurative language learned in class.

- We will cycle back to paragraph writing next week (topic sentences, transitions, supporting details, conclusions)

Homework:

On Thursday, students narrowed down their objects to the 'Final Four' and began writing paragraphs to explain why they chose each item and its significance to The Barren Grounds. Complete two paragraphs by Monday in google classroom.

We were sad and excited to finish our novel The Barren Grounds this week!


Homework:

Complete part I of the final project for The Barren Grounds by MONDAY. Hand out was provided in class and posted in google classroom. The overall explanation of our final project (step by step) is also located in google classroom.

October 22nd

We are finishing week three of The Barren Grounds for Global Read Aloud. Did you see my email regarding PowerSchool and Homework? Students are to read/listen up to ch.14 in preparation for our Kahoot on Monday. If your child is missing two or more assignments, I sent individual emails regarding their progress. Otherwise, please check PowerSchool—it is updated. A reminder that an orange square indicates missing assignments.

October 8th

Have you received my email reminders about homework? If not, please send me your updated email. We are well on our way into our Global Read Aloud book The Barren Grounds. Homework this weekend: Listen to Chapter 5 and complete note/image organizer. Tuesday we will partake in a Kahoot against students all across the globe!

October 1st

PowerSchool is up to date. Emails were sent for students missing assignments thus far. We continued reading the book A Stranger at Home and made connections to other types of media explored during National week for Truth and Reconciliation. On Monday, we will be starting Global Read Aloud!

September 24th

We started reading the book A Stranger At Home (the sequel to Fatty Legs). Ask your child what happened in Chapter One. We also completed our CARS test to collect some baseline data on reading. We will be analyzing results on Monday and figuring out what strategy we can utilize to improve our reading. Picture Day on Monday- don't forget wear your formal uniform!

September 17th

We completed our first entry for the 40 books challenge (see google classroom for assignment). How is your child finding the challenge? They should be accessing their assignment in google classroom regulary to update their reading notebook. We had another CHALLENGE today for reading where students had to crack the code- the reading strategy explored was contextual clues. Ask your child how they found the challenge.

September 8th

Students have been learning about their book challenge for the year. Today we looked at a few different genres of books. Ask your child to explain what a genre is and provide examples.

Please remind your child that they need to bring all their supplies to class. We have many students who arrive without a pencil or paper. I encourage students to use one binder with dividers to stay organized!
