Thank you for visiting the Magnet Programs web page! We have 6 magnet programs and 4 immersion programs awaiting you full of challenging and innovative curriculum. If you are interested in applying for the magnet high schools, please click on the red "ESSAY TOPICS" button FIRST so you can draft your required essay FIRST before applying. 

If you are interested in the elementary or middle school immersion programs, please contact the school for their application.

Brockington Elementary Magnet School for Science and Technology offers a challenging environment with special emphasis on science and computer technology. Students in this immersion program receive a comprehensive, integrated science & technology curriculum based on state and national standards. 


Students outside of the Brockington Elementary zone who wish to apply to attend will need to apply through expanded choice. 

Thornwell School for the Arts ​ is the district's only elementary arts immersion school. Thornwell offers dance, vocal music & instrumental music (strings), theatre, and visual arts to all students in grades 1-5. Students are able to explore and perfect their artistic talents. 


Students outside of the Thornwell School for the Arts zone who wish to apply to attend will need to apply through expanded choice. 

The Darlington Middle School Math and Science Magnet Program provides real-world experiences through exposure to advanced science concepts, a rigorous technology-infused curriculum and partnerships with the scientific and business communities.

The Hartsville Middle School Arts Magnet Program includes chorus, dance, visual arts, and band. In addition, the arts department presents one major theater production each year. All students are encouraged to participate in one of the many opportunities presented through the arts at Hartsville Middle.


Students outside of the Hartsville Middle zone who wish to apply to attend will need to apply through expanded choice. 

2021 Darlington High School Early College Associate Degree Recipients

The Darlington High School Early College Honors Magnet Program partners with Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC) to offer general education college courses while students are still enrolled in high school. FDTC has an arrangement that allows students earning a "C" or higher in each dual-credit class to transfer the credit earned to any state college or university in South Carolina. Out-of-state and private colleges and universities may also accept these courses after evaluating the student's transcript.

The Hartsville High School IB Programme provides Darlington County students with the opportunity to earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma, the most prestigious high school diploma available. The International Baccalaureate Magnet Programme emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving, and exposure to a variety of viewpoints. Students are taught the inter-relatedness of various disciplines and issues, an understanding of issues on an international scale, and responsible citizenship. 

The Institute for Biomedical Innovation will serve as a four-year magnet program at Lamar High School. The program aims to engage students in a challenging and competitive educational environment through case-based scenarios focused in science, mathematics, and technology. The Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical courses promote collaboration, critical thinking, innovation, and communication. 

Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology is a TOTAL MAGNET school. The mission of Mayo High School for Math, Science, & Technology is to provide a challenging curriculum with high expectations in a safe, positive environment. The Mayo curriculum provides unique academic programs for qualified students with special interests, talents, and ambitions. The school offers motivated students the opportunity to combine strong academics with specialized instruction in the areas of math, science, and the technologies while offering enhanced courses in the humanities. 

Delivered by the SC Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) and SC college partners, Accelerate SC's Engineering LaunchPad is a virtual engineering program that allows students to live at home and continue at their local schools while providing the high quality education for which the GSSM is known. The program is held at Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology. Classes are LIVE, not pre-recorded, and are presented virtually through computer and teleconferencing equipment that is provided and maintained by GSSM.
