Week 2/24-2/28

This week, we will be working on...

  • continuing to read anchor text, Two Roads.
  • reading and analyzing supplemental texts that situate the anchor text within a broader historical context.
  • examining author’s point of view, as well as the ways in which the author(s) develop the point of view of key characters in the text(s).
  • completing tasks to integrate information from texts and photos and to continue developing strategies for determining the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary in the text.
  • taking Mid-Unit 1 Assessment: Analyze Point of View and Integrate Information

Week of 2/10-2/14

This week we will be quick week. We will be working on...

  • No Red Ink (Commonly Confused Words II, due 2/18)
  • completing Problem/Solution slideshow presentations
  • NC Check In's (W/Th)
  • Share presentations in small groups


Week of 1/21-1/23

This week will be short and sweet. We will wrap up all second quarter assignments, take the MAP test and have a special guest speaker, Scott Reintgen, a published author!


Weeks of 1/6-1/10 and 1/13-1/17

We will continue to read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. In addition, we will...

  • analyze text structure to determine how it helps to develop central idea
  • identify critical problems in our community and begin the research process
  • determine the relevance and credibility of possible sources
  • identify properly paraphrased work and practice paraphrasing and quoting from varying sources
  • determine the meanings of unknown words and phrases in context
  • take End of Unit 2 Assessment: Research Process. The test will cover:
    • searching for relevant results on a given topic
    • determining the credibility of possible sources
    • paraphrasing text and providing basic bibliography information for sources.




Week of 12/9-12/13

This week, we will continue to read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. We will...

  • analyze the text to determine the Author's Methods used
  • identify the structure of the text
  • determine the central idea of the text
  • write effective summaries
  • analyze figurative language


Week of 10/7-10/11

This week, we will...

  • determine themes in Greek myths and how they are conveyed through details
  • compare and contrast similar themes in The Lightning Thief and Greek myths
  • take Mid-Unit 2 Assessment
  • determine the purpose of a model essay
  • compare and contrast a scene from the novel to the film version of the same scene
  • analyze a model essay by colormarking it ("Painted Essay")


Week of 9/30-10/4

This week, we will...

  • continue to read and discuss The Lightning Thief, annotating and marking Signposts
  • identify themes in TLT
  • compare and contrast TLT to other myths, including "Theseus and the Minotaur", "Cronus" and "Medusa"
  • participate in a school-wide Paideia Seminar


Week of 9/23-9/27


This week, we will...

  • continue to read The Lightning Thief. We will wrap up EL Unit 1 with an End of Unit Book Discussion and writing assessment (Wed/Thur)
  • review how to write a well-constructed paragraph, including how to write a successful topic sentence and how to embed quotes
  • complete a Point of View Anchor Chart (posted in Google Classroom)
  • complete NoRedInk diagnostic
  • visit the Media Center for lesson on digital resources


Week of 9/16-9/20

This week, we will continue to read and discuss The Lightning Thief, with a focus on annotating, text-dependent questions, figurative language and point of view. We will also begin working on NoRedInk, an online tool designed to help students with grammar and writing skills.


Week of 9/3-9/6

Tuesday:

  • complete the Literary Analysis wheel by including textual evidence from "Dark They were..."

Wednesday:

  • introduce Double-Entry Journals, using evidence from "Dark They were..." to support the theme
  • use DEJs to write a well-constructed paragraph about the theme of "Dark They were..."~ change- where you are changes who you are.
  • complete EL Lesson 1~ "Discover our Topic of Greek Mythology"

Thursday-

  • complete EL Lesson 2~ Establishing Reading Routines- The Lightning Thief Chapter 1

Friday-

  • Summer Reading Assessment
  • complete EL Lesson 3~ Analyze Point of View, The Lightning Thief Chapters 1 and 2 (if time allows after assessment)


First Week of School, 8/26-8/30

Monday-

  • get to know each other/write Mrs. Ewers a letter
  • discuss class expectations and write norms
  • take a school tour
  • begin Vanderbilt Lesson 1

Tuesday-

  • review class norms
  • define vocabulary in "Dark They were, and Golden Eyed"
  • read/annotate text

Wednesday-

  • review class norms
  • finish reading/annotating "Dark They were..."

Thursday-

  • review class norms
  • discuss text dependent questions from "Dark They were..."

Friday-

  • review class norms
  • introduce the Literary Analysis Wheel
