Mission Statement

CMS Counseling Mission Statement

The Culpeper Middle School Counselors’ mission is to provide a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and social/personal needs of each and every student. We are professional school advocates who promote academic achievement, equity, and access for all students. In partnership with other educators, parents/guardians, and the community, school counselors work to prevent and remove barriers to student learning. Our goal is to ensure that all CMS students feel challenged and supported to develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally to become productive members of society.

CMS Counseling Philosophy

The CMS counselors believe:

  • All students are entitled to participate in the school counseling program.
  • All students have dignity and worth.
  • All students ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual and gender differences and special needs are considered in planning and implementing the school counseling program.

The CMS counseling program will:

  • Promote and support the academic, emotional, and career development of every student
  • Advocate for and support student success through individual counseling, group counseling, classroom guidance, and personnel collaboration.
  • Actively involve counseling team members to monitor student results.
  • Follow the guidelines set forth by the American School Counseling Association’s National Model of School Counseling.

CMS Counselors will:

  • Abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association.
  • Participate in professional development activities essential to maintaining a quality school counseling program.
  • Support the success of all CMS students.

CMS Counseling Services Offered

  • One-on-one counseling sessions focusing on academic, career, and personal/social growth
  • Crisis counseling for students with immediate concerns
  • Classroom guidance to introduce and develop students’ social skills
  • Small-group sessions focusing on academic skills or personal growth
  • Conflict resolution to help develop personal problem solving skills
  • Consultations with parents/guardians on academic and personal issues and concerns regarding their student
  • Consultations with teachers on issues with individual students, as well as create and discuss educational plans for student success through Child Alternatives in Regular Education (CARE) team meetings.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school psychologists, administrators, and parents to help support positive behaviors in students through Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Collaborating with teachers, other counselors, parents, and students in formulating and implementing interventions

CMS Counseling Program Confidentiality Policy

The information our students share with us is confidential and will not be discussed with others with the following exceptions:

  • Child neglect or abuse
  • Danger to oneself or others
  • Emergency situations
