Technical/Trade School

Technical/Trade School

A trade school (also known as a technical school) is a postsecondary educational institution designed to train students for a specific job in a skilled trade career. Most importantly, a trade school offers hands-on training to prepare students for actual work in their chosen field. These post-secondary options combine career-specific training with general academic curricula. Instructors at technical schools all have training in the particular field in which they teach. Many programs prepare student to take licensing or certification exams upon completion of the required courses.

Students attending technical colleges usually take courses related to their major during their first semester, rather than starting with general education courses as is common at community colleges and four-year universities. . Technical institutes provide specialized training in a specific career field, trade, or profession, including computer technology, business administration, culinary arts, electronics, medical assisting, automotive technology, and cosmetology. Technical colleges emphasize hands-on training and offer internship experience in a relevant work setting.
