Note: I will not be using google classroom this year. I will be sending out a weekly email with links to material, news, and deadlines. Make sure I have your email address!

Description: Geometry with Data Analysis is a newly-designed course in the 2019 Alabama Course of Study (replaces Geometry) which builds on the students’ experiences in the middle grades. It is the first of four courses in high school mathematics, providing a common Grade 9 experience for all students entering high-school-level mathematics. A more detailed description for Quarter 1 is attached at the end of this document.

Textbook: We are using Geometry with Data Analysis by Larson and Boswell. Copies of the text are available in the classroom but will not be issued to students.

Supplies:

3 ring binder of any size. Students will receive handouts for each chapter that include note taking space as well as practice work and activities.

Calculator with sin, cos, and tan functions (I can recommend TI 30XIIS)

pencils of your choice should also be with you daily.

Expo Marker for personal use. We often work problems on our desks with these.

Highlighters. This will be used in note taking.

*Students may also want graph paper and lined paper of their own

I will provide:

graph paper, rulers, protractor, compass, scissors, glue, lined paper, markers and colored pencils from previous classes

I also provide:

My student area contains things that students typically ask me for. This includes bandaids, deodorant, pads, tampons, tide stick, sewing kit, superglue, safety pins and more. I typically have animal crackers or fruit loops as well for students that need a snack. If you would like to contribute to animal crackers or fruit loops, I would love it as this is the thing I buy every week!!

Absences: If you are absent, you should make up the time outside of class. All assignments will be due within 3 days of your return except in the case of prolonged excused absences.

XTRA Help: You must arrange a time during homeroom or before school in advance of coming. Homeroom is also my time to eat lunch, so drop ins are discouraged. There will be lots of time in class for 1 on 1.

Expectations:

  1. You must come ready to work. Please have your homework done, materials with you, and know the plan for the day.

  2. All assignments outside of class are due when class begins. All Khan Academy and Edpuzzle Assignments are due by 8 am. After the tardy bell rings, assignments are late and may only receive the 50% credit.

  3. A list will be emailed weekly for assignments. Please use this checklist as you work.

  4. All problems must be attempted and work must be shown to receive full credit. NO WORK=NO CREDIT. In math, the process is just as important as the ”answer”.

  5. Group assignments require work from every member of the group.

  6. Your work should be yours alone. This does not mean you can’t ask for help. It means you should not turn in work copied from another student. This is called plagiarism. You are expected to maintain Academic Integrity.

Grades:

Major Assessments (Knowledge) 60%

(Tests, Quizzes, Projects, Quarterly Notebook Check)

Daily Assignments (Perspiration/Work) 40%

(Edpuzzles, Khan Academy, Chapter Reviews, Classwork, Group Work)

Daily Assignments that are not completed before class starts will be accepted with a 50% late penalty until the Chapter Test date. On this day, the assignment will be “locked in” and worth 0%.

Path 1 and Path 2: Students will have a choice of completing only Geometry with Data Analysis or doing additional work to get ahead in math.

Path 1 (regular option) students will complete 2-3 Geometry lessons per week. These students plan to take Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and either Pre-Cal or Personal Finance as their 4 high school credits.

Path 2 students (advanced option) will complete the Geometry lessons each week PLUS 2 Algebra 1 lessons per week. While this does NOT give them credit for Algebra 1, it does allow them to take Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Cal, and AP Calculus AB as their 4 credit classes for high school. This Path is for advanced math students ONLY. We will only meet once a week during homeroom on Mondays.
