What is Advisory?

Depending on the day, Advisory is a time to take a bit of a breather from classes, talk as a group, take care of school business, socialize, and get special announcements or handouts to take home. Students stay in their given Advisory for the duration of the year. For 6th graders, Advisory is immediately after lunch. For the typical week, the Advisory schedule looks like this:

Monday and Wednesday - Community Days

Tuesday and Thursday - Study Days

Friday - Social Day

Community Days?

Community Days are times when we can inject some social-emotional learning into our students' lives. Often we do small group games or talk about topics that might otherwise get overlooked or that can be difficult to talk about like bullying and depression or other things that are going on in the school. This is a good way to get to know each other better, and to practice respectful communication. That last bit is important since the topics we talk about can be difficult. Disrespectful behavior during Community Day can lead to a loss of privilege during the next Social Day.

Study Days?

These are days when students get a chance to get caught up/work ahead in their classes. Everyone is expected to come prepared with work from their classes OR with a book to read. Students may visit other classes (if that teacher is also a 6th grade Advisor) to ask questions or get handouts, or may go to the Media Center to look for a book or use the computers. The expectation is silence during these days. As an Advisor, I often do grade-checks during study days to see who is missing what and to show students their PowerSchool so they know what they need to do. The ability to participate in Social Days is contingent on positive behavior during Study Days.

Social Day?

Social Days are semi-free days where students who have been keeping up with work and are productive during Study Days, and respectful during Community Days, can visit other Advisories to talk with friends, play games, go outside (weather permitting) or occasionally to the gym.
