Athletics

Eagle athletics began at Lafayette as early as 1904 with the creation of a football team. Bill Ittner, who went on to become an All-American tackle at the University of Minnesota, was a member of that team. The old city fairgrounds was the football field in those early days. Today the team plays near the Clearwater River, which is commonly referred to as the ball park.

Basketball began at Lafayette in the early 1930s. Team first played in a building on Main Avenue just south of Dodd's Drug Store. When the Community Hall was completed in 1936, basketball moved to the hall and continued there until 1958, when the Lafayette gymnasium was completed.

Track and golf were added in the 1930s, but during years of low participation teams were not formed regularly until the 1950s.

In the early 1940s, Lafayette had organized tumbling teams for both boys and girls. These teams often provided entertainment during half time at basketball games.

In the 1970, girls' volleyball, track and basketball teams were organized.

Baseball began as a organized sport in 1952. In 1955, hockey at the high school level was initiated in Red Lake Falls. An outdoor rink located on the site of the present tennis courts was used until the present city arena was completed in 1964.
