AP Lang

AP English Language and Composition is a rhetoric class.

Rhetoric is the study of how authors use language (words, images, sounds, signals, etc.) to persuade, and of the reactions they intend to elicit from their audience.

A rhetoric class is not the typical English class. It focuses mostly on non-fiction, and, according to the College Board, there are two main goals in studying rhetoric:

  1. Developing critical inquiry skills (11).
  2. Facilitating informed citizenship (11).

To this end, we will engage with and debate issues facing our society today, as well as reading classic works of fiction & nonfiction literature, and studying and producing modern digital media.

As a twenty-first century rhetoric course, we will also studies online visual media and the impact of social media and other media on discourse and thought.

The central goals are to practice reading carefully, thinking critically and writing clearly.
