Course Offerings

CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT I

A ½ unit course designed to provide students with a basic foundation in financial planning, investing, and acquiring wealth. Students will explore banking, savings and budgeting, credit, credit cards, buying a car, car loans, car insurance and investment planning. The investment planning section of the course will cover money market accounts, CD’s, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, traditional and Roth IRA’s, 401K’s, and 529 college savings plans. The career exploration section will emphasize the relationship between career planning and lifelong goals and how it relates to the financial planning process. (This course is a required part of career and technical education program.)

CAREER AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT II

This ½ year unit course is designed to explore the financial planning process. Students will go into an in-depth analysis of the stock markets, bonds and debt, investing, investment scams, retirement and estate planning, the time value of money as well as the economic indicators that affect the markets. Students will also participate in the Stock Market Game to simulate the real world bulls and bears of the stock market. Students will also learn the steps of buying a home and mortgages. Prerequisite: Career and Financial Management I or coordinator approval.

ACCOUNTING

This 1 unit course is designed to give all students an understanding of how the business world’s financial events are reflected on a company’s annual report. This course will focus on learning the fundamental of Accounting. Content encompasses the complete accounting cycle, including journalizing, balance sheets, posting, preparing a trial balance and financial statements. The second part of this class is designed to teach students how to read and understand a company’s financial statements. Any student planning to pursue a business or legal major in college should consider this course. (Students may elect to take this course for college credit through SUNY Farmingdale. There is a tuition fee for these credits. This course is not grade weighted.)

COLLEGE INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

This ½ unit one semester course is offered in conjunction with SUNY Farmingdale. . (There is a tuition fee for the three college credits). The course covers the dynamics and nature of business activities within the framework of the private enterprise system in the U.S. Topics include: the Foundation of Business, Types of Business Ownership, Management, Human Resources, Marketing, Accounting/Finance, the Securities Market and Social Responsibility and Business Ethics. Additional features include guest speakers, and classroom competitions.

COLLEGE BUSINESS LAW

This ½ unit one semester course is offered in conjunction with SUNY Farmingdale. (There is a tuition fee for the three college credits). The course covers topics including the general principles of law, including: Court Systems and Jurisdiction, Torts, Contracts, Administrative Law, Personal Property, Agency Law, Business Organizations, and Internet Law. Additional features include guest speakers, mock trials, and individual research on cases using the Internet and other resources. College Business Law is a requirement at most colleges for business majors. Any student planning to pursue a business or legal major in college should consider this course.

COMPUTERS FOR COLLEGE

This ½ unit course offers a fast paced and thorough introduction to major computerized applications needed for college success and employment. Course will emphasize word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and database design. Microsoft Excel 2013 and Microsoft Word 2013 will be covered in depth. Students will learn how to build complex worksheets; graph, use mathematical, financial, and statistical functions. In Microsoft Word students will learn how to set up college research papers and use short cuts to make the college workload manageable. This course provides students with mastery skills necessary for academic success in college and the workplace. Students who complete this course will learn how to use the computer as a problem solving tool and the have ability to learn new software with ease. Internet safety including identity protection is taught in this course. (Students may elect to take this course for college credit through SUNY Farmingdale. There is a tuition fee for these credits. This course is not grade weighted.)

GOOGLE APPS

This ½ unit course provides students with the opportunity to learn Google Apps and create multimedia (sounds, graphics, text etc.) for the web. Topics include Gmail, Google calendar, Google docs, Google drive, Google sites, conversion tools; web based presentation tools, video editing, and creating presentations that look different from the typical dull PowerPoint. Be the next YouTube sensation! There is no prerequisite for this course. It is recommended that you take this course with Computers for College or Keyboarding. Internet safety including identity protection is taught in this course.

BUSINESS OWNERSHIP (START YOUR OWN BUSINESS)

Would you like to start your own business? Maybe you have an idea for a new product or service. This ½ unit course will teach you how to start and manage a small business. Designed for students who want to evaluate going into business for themselves or working for a small business. Course content includes developing an idea, financing & incorporating your business, advertising, staffing and current practices of managing a small business. The course also combines the necessary research and methods necessary to provide students the skill to complete a detailed analysis of their small business idea. By the end of the course the student will have completed a business plan ready for small business start up.

FASHION MARKETING

This 1 unit course introduces students to the apparel and accessories industries. Focusing on current fashion trends, students will acquire an understanding of industry terminology, international fashion markets, marketing strategies, event planning, and product & design development. This program focuses on the world of fashion. The program is divided into seven key components of fashion; (1) history of fashion (2) visual merchandising (3) consumer demand (4) design, illustration and color (5) international fashion (6) the business of fashion and (7) event marketing. Students will be involved in hands-on projects including visual displays, designers’ projects, and event planning and fashion design. *Field trip to fashion district in NYC.

KEYBOARDING

This ½ credit course, taught on computers, using Microsoft Word, is designed to develop alphabetic, as well as numeric keyboarding skills. The second part of the course will concentrate on developing a college portfolio including researching colleges, application process, college essay, resume writing, interest tests, researching scholarships and understanding how to be successful in college life.

KEYBOARDING/BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS

This 1 unit course is offered as an elective OR to fulfill a business program of study. This course is taught using Word and is designed to develop alphabetic, numeric, and symbolic keyboarding skills. Topics include basic word processing concepts, various letter styles, e-mail communications, tables, and essay/report formats including college research/term paper format. The second semester of the year will focus on communication skills including business and professional speaking, grammar and writing skills with emphasis on the job application process.

SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING

This 1 unit course introduces students to the important role that marketing plays in the Sports & Entertainment industry. The first project will involve learning how to market a professional sports team. The students will cover the following areas: developing their teams, branding, creating jerseys, stadium location and financing, analyzing commercials, advertisements, and magazines and use

Microsoft Publisher to design a website for their sports franchise. The second project will involve investigating Hollywood and the movie industry. The students will learn how Hollywood markets a movie as well as explore the numerous job opportunities that are related to the movie industry. In addition, the students will create movie scripts, movie posters and a marketing plan.
