OEMS Swim Team 2024 Season

Week of January 29-Feb 2

1) Monday, Jan 29 - Practice 3:30-4:30

2) Tuesday, Jan 30- Intersquad Practice Meet. 3:30-4:45 (approximately). See additional details below.

3) Thursday, Feb 1 -  Practice 3:30-4:30

Practice Meet Details:

Rationale: We like to have a "practice" meet to help the swimmers get acquainted with reading the meet program and basically getting a sense of how to get to the right lane at the right time, etc. Also, it gives us a chance to make sure all the electronic timing equipment is working properly.  So, we just want to be clear that it is a very low-stakes event.

Can't make it? If your swimmer is unable to attend, no worries, we understand. But, it is helpful to know which kids will not be there due to planning the relays. So, if your swimmer is unable to be there, please send me an email letting me know. Thank you.

Events: We are keeping this one simple. All swimmers will be swimming the same things: 50 Freestyle (front crawl), 50 Backstroke, and 1 relay (200 freestyle - each swimmer swims 50 free.)

Spectators are welcome, of course. The pool balcony will be open, come on in and cheer. We expect to start the first heats of the 50 free around 4:00.

Meets with Lincoln Park Cancelled

We were sorry to learn this week that Lincoln Park Middle School is unable to have a swim team this year because of complications with the pool filtration system, and so access to their pool has been denied. Luckily, we have two meets scheduled with Superior Middle School, and those will remain on the calendar. (February 6th and March 4th are the dates we DO have meets.)

Coaches: Ms. Bowen-Bailey, Ms. Teichroew, Ms. Krafthefer

Goals of this program:

• Provide a positive experience for all participants

• Introduce swimmers to requirements of being on a team, including attending practices, coming to meets, keeping up with homework, etc.

• Help swimmers to improve in the sport overall

• Help swimmers to learn about and experience friendly competition

• Build school pride

• Encourage swimmers to continue participation in athletics at the high school level

To help us meet our goals, students who want to participate must:

• Come to two practices every week, one if active on another community swim team

• Demonstrate good behavior and a positive attitude at practices and competitions

• Maintain passing grades in all classes at school

Athletics Fee:

• There is a $25 fee per student to join the swim team. This includes a team cap students will be able to keep.

• Students currently receiving Free/Reduced lunch are exempt from this fee.

• Payment is due by January 12. If there is problem with making this payment, don’t hesitate to contact one of the coaches, we will try to work something out.

• Checks can be written to Ordean East Middle School (include Swim Team on the memo line.)
