Course Description: The primary purpose of Yearbook Production and Yearbook Journalism is to create and publish the Hilltopper. Students will learn and apply skills in several of the following areas: page design, advanced publishing techniques, copy writing, editing and photography, verbal communication skills, marketing and advertising, time management, and leadership. There is an emphasis on journalism skills in this class. Participants gain useful, real world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles.

Instructional Philosophy: Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments typical of the graphic design and publishing industries. I expect high quality work and will require that staff members redo any work that does not meet that standard. I also expect students to meet all deadlines in order for us to avoid added printing costs.

Course Goals:

· Students will learn publishing terminology.

· Students will become familiar with Jostens Yearbook Avenue website.

· Students will work with various types of technology to produce a “book of memories” such as digital camera, computer, and video software.

· Students will apply computer skills and design principles to the production of yearbook pages.

· Students will learn copy writing techniques, caption writing, and headline writing.

· Students will expand their verbal communication skills.

Grades

60% - Major Grades Meeting page deadlines, ad sales, supervising student picture days

(Major grades must be completed on time; late assignments will receive a failing grade.)

40% - Minor Grades Minor sections assignments, quote gathering, advertising, etc.

Out-of-Class Participation: Students are expected to participate in outside-of-class time activities. To produce a complete yearbook, students will be required to attend school activities to take photographs and gather information to be used in the yearbook. Due to the nature of publishing deadlines students will be expected to work periodically after school and on Saturdays to meet publishing deadlines.

Expected Behaviors: I am determined to offer students at Hillcrest the best yearbook we can create. I will give my best efforts to achieve that goal, and I expect the same from the yearbook staff.

· Punctuality

· Full participation in class, after school, and on weekends when necessary

· Appropriate language and behaviors

· Respect and courtesy toward all students, staff, and guests

· Applying the skills you already have and learning new ones

· Asking for help when needed

· Responsible, mature attitudes on campus and off campus
