School History

  • Nayaug Elementary School opened its doors to students in August 2007.

  • Nayaug was named for the Native American tribe that lived in the South Glastonbury area.

  • The name is pronounced Nā-awg and means “Noisy Water.”

School Mascot & Mini-Beast

During our inaugural year, our second graders learned about different animals found in the South Glastonbury area. After a presentation from a local children's museum, the students voted to determine the best mascot for Nayaug School. The owl was chosen for its association with wisdom. Our school mascot is the great horned owl. Second graders also choose to identify a school "mini-beast," which is a term from the second grade science curriculum. The butterfly serves as a symbol of the changes our students will go through during their six years at Nayaug. Our school "minibeast" is the monarch butterfly.

School Colors

During our inaugural year, our Kindergarteners learned about colors. Kindergarten students voted to determine Nayaug's school colors and chose: Blue and Gold
